Hi all first post from me ;o) I was just having a chat with akula on IRC and we thought that it would be a good idea if the group had a contact phone number so I suggested something like an 07050 number which can be redirected to any number you wish so different people could take turns manning the hotline as it were. These numbers are only about £5.00, what does everyone think? Cheers, Ben

Hi Toby, Dunno about 'voting' anarchy, by definition there would be nobody to vote for or any voting system...? However I take your point. Currently what we have is not Democracy (Rulership by the Demos) but a form of autocracy in which we (the Demos) get to vote for a new/continued autocrat every few years. Democracy is supposed to be about the 'will of the people' whatever that is... What I personally would like to see is an end to corporate lobbyism. Since a corporation is not by definition or otherwise a member of the Demos it should thus have no say in a democracy. Now I know all the chestnuts for this line but the bottom line is that we the demos are not represented as extensively as corps. This is un-democratic. > Toby Jaffey<toby(a)earth.li> wrote > > Mostly however I will attempt to stay within the land of the 'free', a > > growing world. Unless they realise (through education etc) that they are giving up freedoms, and the implications for those freedoms and their other life choices by giving up those freedoms, and have a choice to take options that work without compromising those freedoms. This is what 'Free Software' etc is about, as we all know. Freedom to do what you like without the ability to restrict those freedoms for others. It is a bit of a concept shift that is difficult to grasp at first, especially when being FUD-ed (what odds on a 'DecCSS can break your DVDs' story in the future?). > David Freeman <david_freeman(a)rocketmail.com> wrote > So niave, you mean to say you thought we actually got a say in hwat > happens. True, which is why we need to pull together on it. To me there will be two kinds of people who take a stand on this sort of thing. Those who boycott altogether and those who will continue to crack, use DecCSS or whatever to protect their right to proper use. Either way if enough people do it then it will have an effect. There are myriads of options for making it downright difficult to enforce this sort of thing. Eg. I have been involved in the past in counter-cult work, where a large religious cult (talk about multi-national corps, this one is the largest real-estate developer and the largest publisher in the world... and it's a charity!!!) was trying to shut down web sites which were critical of it. This org is not short of a few bob. They soon gave up because chasing down the ever-moving domains/mirrors, contacting ISPs, beginning legal action, discovering they had moved again etc, became impossible. Of course with the reduction in 'free' ISPs worldwide such a method might not be so easy in future. But you see my point? Frustrating efforts, spoiling tactics, that sort of thing. > David Freeman <david_freeman(a)rocketmail.com> wrote > RIP bill is a classic example of this. Indeed! I have a friend who works at GCHQ. Its funny talking to him about work because he's not allowed to tell you anything about what he does.... So the other day he says he's really busy bcuz he's got tons to do for some new thing being introduced... trying to be vague or what!. Nearly fell off his chair when I said "Yeah I bet that RIP act has got your lot busy as hell!". > This is great in theory, but for most things the market is several > millions of people and we are just a handful. For now yes, dissenters in this area are just a handful, but as the number of 'free' software users increases, and exposure to this way of thinking also increases, so will the number of dissenters. Especially if we don't all shrug our shoulders and let this matter go away, but keep it 'on the agenda' as it were so that newcomers can also pick up on it. David Freeman <david_freeman(a)rocketmail.com> wrote > Quite true, we need to get the ball to start rolling, this is one of > the reason I have been pushing NLD. No, that's actually very very easy if you know the right (wrong?) way to stroke it. It's also possible to leave it functioning but in various states of unrecoverable brokenness, thanks to the modular nature of most Unix systems. The admin tools and documentation seem rather primitive compared to Linux's, yet are incredibly over-engineered. Basically, it's bizarre. ;-) -- MJR

Desperate Apache Problem!
by Mark Wilkinson 21 Apr '01

21 Apr '01

One of our RedHat servers decided it wasn't going to play ball this morning (worthy of another email on exactly this subject actually) but as an upshot of this, I've had to move several websites to another server that is being good. So... ftp'ed the websites to the other server and cut-n-pasted the apache config file etc. After fidding around a bit have managed to get everything up and running -except- for two virtual domains which aren't behaving themselves. As it happens, these two domains are on both 80 and 443 (SSL). When I access them, I get an HTTP 302 which I don't really understand. All the other domains are working fine. Have examined the logs and used telnet to connect to port 80 to see exactly what headers etc are coming back. Normally, a 302 should give a URL to redirect to, which in this case is "http://" without any other info. Weird. Any ideas/clues - am getting very frustrated now? Cheers. Mark W. PS. apache 1.3.14 w mod_ssl 2.5.1 and mod_php4.0.4pl1

Network Woes!
by Mark Wilkinson 21 Apr '01

21 Apr '01

OK, Here's another one for you experts out there. We've got a 24 port hub/switch in telehouse which is connected to a router. We've got several machines connected up and they are running great. No problems. Excellent connectivity. One of our guys goes down to London yesterday and swops a network card in one of the boxes and installs a fresh new RedHat box in the cabinet for us to play with. Things start to go weird.. The box with the new network card in it and the totally new box can see all the other machines on the subnet and they can see each other. Fine up to now. So.. I try to telnet into these boxes from home (NTL dialup modem) and can't access them. I can access all the other machines on that subnet no problem but not those two machines. In addition, those two machines can't see the router that's attached to the hub. I'm running no clever firewalling or anything on any of those machines. My thoughts are that the switch is misbehaving and is about to smoke or that the router is selectively ignoring certain addresses... Any other thoughts on this? Cheers. Mark W.

Yep, I made the 3c509 file, ran the update modules, and sure as eggs it has picked it up. However, somewhere the card is still bound to ne.....not in aliases, not in modules.conf.....so when I try to bring up eth0 it is telling me "ne.c: No NE*000 card found at i/o=0x2a0 eth0: unknown interface: No such device"........anyone have any idea? Thanks, Jenny.

can anyone help with installing a driver?
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 20 Apr '01

20 Apr '01

Hi All, I've swapped my DLink net card for a 3com509B to see if I can get better results. I've got as far as loading the necessary 3c509 driver and associating it with eth0, rather than the previous ne driver. However, being unfamiliar with Debian I am not sure as to how to go about changing the modules.conf......in /etc/modutils I have a directory called ne, and in this I edited the address and alias eth0 lines to suit, then ran update-modules. So does it make sense to create a directory called 3c509 and put the same info in it and run update-modules? How does update-modules know that it now edits in from the new 3c509 file rather than the ne file, if so? I'm in a "groan, this is all too hard" mood today. Thanks, Jenny.

Weird FTP Problem - any ideas guys??
by Mark Wilkinson 20 Apr '01

20 Apr '01

Well, here I am de-lurking at last! Have got a really infuriating problem with no clues on how to solve it. Have got two Redhat machines, one is 6.2, the other is 7.0. They are on the same network with a 100 meg hub between them. They both have 100meg network cards. I'm trying to ftp a 70meg file from the 6.2 box to the 7.0 box. I would expect the the transfer to take a matter of seconds but it takes an eternity and seems to get slower and slower as it progresses we're talking transfer rates of < 1K here. I'm totally stumped as to what is causing this and need some kind of tool to analyse the problem and work out what is going wrong here. Any ideas about this please? Cheers.
