A time would be pretty essential. David, did you get anyone to print any yet? I have a colour printer at home, but from experience of printing band posters it is a costly project. I've set the reply-to accordingly, so if someone would write a short piece on what we're doing, it should go to the list and Denny for the article. This is a good opportunity to promote the LUG and help a new UK-based magazine site. Of course, my involvement in both doesn't colour my opinion ;-) Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2001 14:16:07 +0100 (BST) From: Denny <denny(a)concretecow.com> This is an excerpt from a mail on the developers' list for the about-to-launch open source website Think Open (www.thinkopen.co.uk) which grew from the ashes of the LinuxUK website... I'd like to hear comments etc... I'm willing to co-ordinate the snippets and write them up into an article if everyone wants to mail them to me? We could do a follow-up afterward as well, that could be quite good... Thoughts? Oddly enough, the kernel nfs in Linux 2.2 has been better for me than the Solaris implementation in 2.5.1 and 2.6. Solaris 7 and 8 are better than 2.2, so I'm hoping that the 2.4 kernels will level things up again. The non-kernel nfs server isn't worth using, though, and in most cases you should use rsize=8192,wsize=8192. Now I've rebuilt this machine, I'm off to play with ext3 (mangled /home, here we come!). Fantastic! Ifconfig now shows eth0 rather than dummy0: - io address was 0x2a0. Thanks, I would never had known to change that. tcpdump now showing host jenny/TCL unreachable, no other traffic showing. netstat -rn shows 192.168.11.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U eth0 tcpdump does show at the end "eth0 > arp who-has jenny/TCL tell TRX850/TCL (0:80:c8:78:42:bf)" after using lo to ping its own IP address. Thanks all. My problem has moved on and up. Jenny.

by Earl Brannigan 12 Apr '01

12 Apr '01

Hi All, Sorry to all and sundry if this has nothing at all to do with the remit of ALUG. Please however spare me the flames. This is the sort of thing that really pisses me off. The reason I switched to Linux in the first place was one thing ... freedom. I'm sick of being held to ransom by the big corporates. But its no suprise. Democracy is a misnomer. Little people don't get heard while the big corporates have more lobbyists than there are MPs MEPs etc to lobby. Since when did a company vote? When did a company campaign for human rights? When did a company die on a battlefield protecting those rights? David you ask what we can do. The only thing one can do is to stick to open, non-copyrighted stuff as far as practical. Boycott those which seek to restrict your choices as both a citizen and a consumer. These things are snuck in very quietly, with cleverly orchestrated lead ups to convince people that these are good things. Thereby "protecting people's intellectual property" (a noble good thing to do) becomes necessary due to the 'high speed, rapidly changing knowledge economy" (something we all are a part of like it or not) but results in restrictions on choice and liberty being introduced by stealth - and nobody notices. For me, I will continue to exercise what I consider to be essential human freedoms - if that puts me in a position 'outside of the law' then so be it. Everyone must be their own master in this. I will support organisations such as Free Software Foundation which is involved in trying to prevent Software and Business Process patents from being enacted creating a complete minefield for anyone considering a software solution. Mostly however I will attempt to stay within the land of the 'free', a growing world. So when someone comes along with a proprietary restricive DVD software for Linux I'll say "No Thanks". If enough people say no thanks then the market (the only thing the Coporates Understand) will become the advocate of the free, supplying a voice to the dissenters. This is why things like National Linux Day are good. Getting people to begin thinking in 'free, open' terms can be like rescuing them from a cult. For me the past few years with GNU/Linux has opened up a whole world that I never realised existed. A rich environment that reciprocates in an almost altruistic manner. For me this is priceless, and the more people that realise this, get involved and make it work the better. When people aren't buying and aren't caring you can bet that the big guys will take note. Eg. Napster.....Sod off Bertelsmann or whatever your name is, You can spend as many millions as you like trying to shut them down, but its already too late... enough have tasted that even if Napster disappears, thousands more are waiting in the wings to step in to the breach. The Snowball to Snowman analogy is true. It takes loads of effort to make a snowman, but you expend 80% in the first few rolls trying to get the snow to gather, but once the ball has enough weight you just have to keep it moving forward, growth will take care of itself. So that's all we need to do, keep this thing moving, keep the debates open, keep raising the issues, keep convincing people that free is good, it's here. Final word has to go to Soren Aabye Kierkegaard "People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid." I'm climbing off my soapbox now. Sorry again if this is waffle to you all. Best Regards Earl Message: 14 > Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2001 14:34:50 -0700 (PDT) > From: David Freeman <david_freeman(a)rocketmail.com> > Reply-To: David_freeman(a)rocketmail.com > To: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk > Subject: [Alug] A dark day for freedom > > All, > > For those of you who read slashdot will have seen the reference to the > following article. > > http://europa.eu.int/comm/internal_market/en/intprop/intprop/news/copyri ght.htm#4 > > the way I understand this is that it is now illegal to circumvent copy > protection on media, such as the norwegain student(jon johassan I > think) did last year to the DVD spec. Hello All. Thanks for the help. >What does ifconfig -a show? shows "dummy0" and loopback. ># /etc/network/interfaces This not only shows the lo but iface dummy0 inet static...then all the correct IP info I want for the real thing. >So to add a new interface you would add a line to this file like: >iface eth0 inet <hostname-or-ip> I've edited it to show "eth0" in place of dummy0 now. Can I do it like that? (I'll find out!) /modules.conf show many protocols to be loaded for ppp and suchlike, but no mention of eth0. It does have "options ne iox300 irq=10" I've edited in "alias eth0 ne" now just before the above line.. The card is a D-Link DE-220P, which uses the ne driver. (PnP) ifconfig -a still shows dummy0. I think I can officially say I am bewildered now. Using ifconfig to try and bring up eth0 shows eth0: unknown interface: No such device ne.c: No NE*000 card found at i/o = 0x300 Anyone? Jen.

Your routing table is trying to route over dummy0 when it needs to be over eth0. What does ifconfig -a show? networking probs

Hullo All, I'm trying to connect my debian box to our windows network (amidst many scowls from the network administrator who doesn't trust all this here linux stuff.) ("Who on earth uses linux?, I mean all that basic command line stuff, it's like going back to DOS...."). We have a few subnetworks connected to router boxes, I am trying only to connect to the immediate subnetwork my work winbox is on, address which is 192.168.11.0. (to start with anyway, heh heh!) I have linux box pinging itself on loopback and 192.168.11.106 (its assigned network IP), also by name (TRX850) but not any of the machines on the network. ifconfig also shows network card to be present and correct. I have netstat -rn showing 192.168.11.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U dummy0 0.0.0.0 192.168.11.100 UG dummy0 (router box IP for this network) /etc/hosts has had all IP addresses and names on the local network edited in, e.g 127.0.0.1 localhost 192.168.11.106 TRX850/TCL TRX850 192.168.11.102 jenny/TCL jenny /etc/resolv.conf I have left empty /etc/networks has localnet 192.168.11.0 TCL 192.168.11.0 /etc/hosts.conf has order hosts, bind multi on. This is a pretty basic question, I know, and I ought to know this stuff by now, but can anyone look at what I've done and go ...."ahhh, you silly thing, you've....."???? Thanks! Jenny PS David (Akula) did you get my mail about the poster for linuxday?
