LinuxDay distributions
by Mark Ray 07 Apr '01

07 Apr '01

I see from David's draft website, the question of distribution has arisen again. In an attempt to avoid the normal discussion being repeated, I'll just point out that we have a large quantity of Mandrake CDs available, Debian is common on campus and there will be a mirror available, but I think having a distribution which installs inside a DOS or Windows partition could be useful. Any suggestions as to which? Peanut? Time to get reading the Mandrake and Debian installation guides... Can we have the "we need this" list from my earlier email on the page too? Thanks, MJR

Well, if you want to show versatility, there's the offer of a set-top box which uses Linux as a demonstration. Do you want me to try to arrange for it to be at UEA? Are you on the LinuxDay mailing list? If not, I can try to find the instructions for it. WRT website, we have 10Mbps to the Hive, the disclaimer forms are on the linuxday.org.uk site and I'd rather not have my address posted in the clear for the spam spiders to pick up, please (especially not in my current state). Well, there's three of us sort-of updating the website, but anyone wanting to be a "website czar" is quite welcome to help and I'll answer questions about the setup of it until the cows come home. Similarly, if a "LinuxDay czar" wants to appoint themselves, I'm sure the veterans will rally round even though we're a bit pushed for time. That said, I'm a bit stuck with doing anything for a few days because of a trip and the death of my computer. I think I've now got email working well enough to read new messages and send emails, but I can't get access to emails from before Tuesday until it's back. Sorry to everyone that affects. This message should tell for sure whether this email works again, I guess. If anyone ever wants a Berkeley-mail-like interface to POP emails (and why would you?), just ask me. MJR

Damnit, I'd better start reading up on IRC quickly, then. I was thinking that if I knew how I would put up a page on the website that is cleverly linked to a simple table, so it can be updated, and folks visit the site over the next few days, update the tables with if they are coming and what they are bringing, and Bob's yr uncle. I'm probably unlikely to learn how to do this in the next few days though, although i enthusiastically printed the few pages of html tags david pointed me to. That's a bit like sending away for a clutch cable thinking I will be able to build a Ducati probably. Jen

Perhaps the person who is in charge of the web pages could construct a list of who is going, what they are bringing, what job they are doing, then at the bottom have a list of what we still need doing or bringing? List can be updated by said person as members mail him/her saying what they can bring/do? I would be willing if i had the first clue about websites, but this is on my list of "things to learn about". Who does the web pages again? (sorry about the suggestion! If they send me a quick tutorial I will co-ordinate, though).

Hi Chris You are currently using tesco.net I see - When you originally signed up, you should have had a confirmation email with all the login details. I had one, but the only thing missing was the phone number. Put the info into the various fields in wvdial setup, and set the mail server identities in your chosen mail reader, and you're away. If you need any specific help accessing tesco.net, email me at home paul.corner(a)tesco.net Regards, Paul. >Christopher Brown: >I am new to Linux and have bought Suse 7 Pro, I have managed to install it >after several headaches and a new graphics card, now I want to hook up to an >isp. OK, here we go. This thread has come at an opportune moment. --- Jenny_Hopkins(a)toby-churchill.com wrote: > > PS. Has someone booked a room for Alug for the linux installfest? Yes, it was confirmed today. ALUG's event will be hosted by tsw.org.uk (logo available on request) and take place in the Hive Bar, Union House, UEA Norwich. For those of you who have been to ALUG meetings at Union House, this is the large area opposite reception on the entrance floor. We have it from 1400 to 1830, so I'd suggest a helpers meeting in the small bar downstairs at 1pm, just so we know who we are and what we're doing (and are able to have a (soft?) drink beforehand). > > Do we need to get posters up, advertise on the web, etc? Is he willing to do it again? I think I've got my hands full with work and trying to organise the bits at UEA. Can we nominate a representative to talk to the linuxday mailing list, too? I'll cc this to them so they know that things are rolling in East Anglia, so make sure your replies only go to alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk ;-) David Freeman <david_freeman(a)rocketmail.com> writes: > Sorry for shouting, but we need to sort something out here about > what we are doing. UEA has an infestation of Debian users and I should have spoken with the central computing service about setting up a local Debian mirror before LinuxDay. If they show their usual glacial reaction, I will make a Debian mirror or CD available to the meeting somehow. We should also have Mandrake CDs from LinuxDay's national sponsors, MandrakeSoft, I believe. The disclaimer and national advertising should also be coming from the national co-ordinator at LinuxSure, I think. > Does someone want to coordinate who's bringing and doing what? mouse config puzzle
by Jenny_Hopkins＠toby-churchill.com 03 Apr '01

Hullo, list. Can anyone help? After running xf86config in Debian, typing startx gives "Cannot open mouse (No such file or directory)". On looking, I see /dev/mouse hasn't been created. Can I just create my own (and how? using a text editor ok?), indicating a softlink to /dev/ttyS*? How do i know which /ttyS* it is using? (Typing "cat" for /dev files usually leaves me with a hanging situation, no doubt I am trying to read them the wrong way as they are actually being created on the hoof.) Many thanks. Jen PS. Has someone booked a room for Alug for the linux installfest? Do we need to get posters up, advertise on the web, etc? Get lists of members who can attend and what equipment they can bring? (Sorry if someone is on the case and I've missed it, I feel a Virgo surge coming on..)

ATX, Open Tshirts, 29/4/01 and DVD
by David Freeman 01 Apr '01

01 Apr '01

All, As usual it never rains but it poors. I have a number of questions, and was wondering if anyone else on the list could help. 1) Is it possible to configure linux to turn an ATX pc off when you run halt? 2) Who was the person on mondays IRC who had started a open tshirts project? 3) Does anyone know if and what is happening on 29/04/01 with regard National linux day? We only have 29 days left to plan! 4) And finally, I currently refuse to buy a DVD player(as in Hi-fi seprate) for a number of reasons, most notably I feel that region coding is an infringment on my rights. But I do feel alot happier with the idea of playing DVD's from linux with the DeCSS(or similiar) code. Can anyone advise on what I would need to play DVD's full screen(or even better 16:9 on a normal screen) with normal stereo sound out the sound card. 4-b) What would I then require to output the sound to a AC-3 decoder? Thanks D __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo! Mail. http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/?.refer=text

installing debian probs

Hullo list. I'm stuck in a loop installing this here debian...... "do you want to create /etc/X11/XF86Config file? y/n" y ......."_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111 Unable to communicate with X server! The /etc/X11/XF86Config file was not created. Press [Enter] to switch to graphics mode. This may take a while... Press [Enter] to continue Pressing enter, of course, takes it back to the beginning, but there doesn't seem to be another option. Any ideas? Thanks, Jenny.

debian kernel source problem
by d.casal 28 Mar '01

28 Mar '01

Hi all, Just trudging along trying to install ALSA. Have recompiled kernel to support VFAT, sound (with no modules), and loadable module support. Compiled the ALSA driver (finally), after realizing it was looking for sources in /usr/src/linux and inserting --with-kernel=/usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.12 (where my recompiled srcs live). Now though, a problem with recompiling the lib packages (alsa). On the mailing list archives, it says I might have to upgrade libc (suggestion was to upgrade to frozen/potato libc6)... Is it alright to have sources live as kernel-source-2.2.12? How do I change that to /usr/src/linux if I need to? Because I wanted to boot an NTFS partition also, I did 'make zdisk' after 'make bzImage' (linux kernel how-to) so I could boot from diskette...is that the problem? How do I actually get libc6 installed? sorry for the multiple newbie questions, just excited to be close to having ALSA-SBLive! working. d ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------- david casal +44 (0) 1603-613607 | d.casal(a)uea.ac.uk http://www.ariada.uea.ac.uk/~dcasal | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------\

FTP and telnet connections to a RH box
by David Howe 27 Mar '01

27 Mar '01

Greetings, I've just reinstalled RH61 onto the same (local) box it was on before - but now for some reason when I try to FTP or telnet into it it makes the connection but never sends a response request for username and password (or at least it times out after a couple of minutes) so I can't actually log in! I can however Samba into it no probs and http works fine too - any ideas as I'm only a low-to-middling propellorhead. I have changed nothing hardwarewise all I did was reformat and install from the exact same copy of RH61 as previously - I suspect I may not have included something in the custom install. Kind regards, Dave Howe hippy(a)thehippy.com

Linux Install Problems?
by tom potts 27 Mar '01

27 Mar '01

Just got a copy of RH7 (£5) from linuxdot.org. I installed a 'workstation' onto my Dell Latitude C600 via the DVD rom - it took 20 (twenty!) minutes from loading the cd, making the boot disk,to install nearly a gig and recognised all the devices, make and boot from a boot floppy and be up and running in Gnome. I though I'd mention this as laptops are often a problem. Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get email at your own domain with Yahoo!
