None have reached completion (and given how much has to be put in to chip design, perhaps they won't for some time yet). Try looking at http://f-cpu.tux.org/ for example. MJR

Free Hardware Foundation

Hello ALUG, If there is another meeting in Norwich/UEA I will probably be there. If there is a Free Software Foundation (FSF) why is there no Free Hardware Foundation (FHF). FHF could have open source chip designs, that could be loaded on to FPGAs. Image free modem, cpus etc.. You could get the latest bug-fix, speed improvement, feature etc. Yours Tarquin Mills

Fujitsu and Sony announced Crusoe Notebook

Morning from Japan This morning Fujitsu and Sony both announced the release of the notebooks that uses Transmeta's Crusoe CPU. Of which, many of you are more interested in Sony's Vaio C1. Sony Vaio C1 comes with Windows ME, 128Mb SDRAM (x1), 12Gb HD, 8.9 inch Ultra Wide XGA 1024x480 TFT, 56kbps moden, and the rest of Sony stuff. They uses Crusoe TM 5600 600MHz on 100Mhz system clock, so it's kinda fine I guess. The machines lasts 5.5 hours on small battery, 11 hours on large one, and 20 hours on real large one (rofl!) Disappointing about this performance? The first sales at Akihabara - Tokyo's Eletronic Town - comes on 7th October. People predict the price of 230,000 yen - GBP 1,500.00, without 5% Consumption Tax. Fujitsu one's almost the same expect it comes with DVD but TM 5600 540Mhz. And the price's the same. Book Bonanza

Ok, perhaps an exaggeration, but I've just received a mammoth tome, "Linux IP Stacks Commentary" as a free gift from CoriolisOpen Press. It's basically 500 pages of IP stack code printed out, with another 200 of discussion at the back. The discussion seems to be quite interesting and entertaining, but the whole thing is based around 2.0.36. I don't know how much the IP stack has changed since then, but there is no mention of IPv6, for example. Anyway.... the book is here, if you're interested in reading it, let me know before the next ALUG and I'll make sure it's there. If you want more info on Coriolis books, see www.coriolis.com . I've always used commercially-produced CDs (ie Boxed) to do installs. Could anyone help with a sound recording problem?

I am running Debian 2.2, kernel 2.2.17pre6 and a SoundBlaster Live using the Creative/Emu module. Try as I might I cannot record anything! When I say I cannot record I mean that, although I can create a file by using something like Gramofile, Sound-recorder or KRecord, when it is played back it produces silence (not a scientifically accurate statement)! If I boot the machine into Windows 95 (shudder!!!) I can record and playback successfully and I can play the recorded .wav file back using Linux. The recorded file produced by Linux also produces silence under windows. I have tried recording as a user and as root - no difference. /dev/dsp has rw permission for owner and group. Anyone want a recording of silence? Barry Samuels
