2ND ANNOUNCE: ALUG, UEA, Tomorrow 1400!
by MJ Ray 25 Jul '00

25 Jul '00

Anglian Linux Users Group proudly present "ALUG The Underpromoted" Union House, UEA, Norwich 1400, Sunday 23 July Well, in the absence of the hoped speaker, this has degenerated into a meeting which will include: Network games xblast - 8-player multi-system bomberman-style lxdoom - the classic probably quake variants, if we get them working again probably some spiffy 3d stuff too and some SDL-based games, if we find some worth playing Games will either be on a local file server, or not need installing on client machines <g> ALUG website and email hosting where shall we put it? who will help? when do we move it? Next two meetings: Deadlines for confirming outside speakers so we don't end up in this state again. Appointing organisers? Directions should be on the website from past meetings at UEA, as this is in the same place. We have an 8-port hub available, but we are short of network cards and patch leads, so please bring them along with your machines and power cables. Discussion of any of the above points are welcomed on the mailing list alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk

Re: [Alug] Handspring vs Palm
by MJ Ray 25 Jul '00

25 Jul '00

Well, the main thing to remember is that the Palm, Handspring and the newer Sony clones all use different add-on formats, although adapters for some connectors are now becoming available (according to Palm Tipsheets). Pick the one that has the right add-ons that you think you might want. On the Linux end, I have coldsync working well with a serial cradle. I don't know if USB works as well, as I don't have that. ;-)

Yes, it's Sunday 23rd July. Suggestions for what to do welcomed. I'd suggest that we try network games, as there's not going to be much life on campus to impress with wonderful science. If we do go for that, can people suggest good network games, so we can install them and then not worry about an external network? I'll start off by suggesting Dumb, the doom engine with the sanest net play. (Search freshmeat for it.)

Linux only sees 64Mb of 384Mb. IIRC there is some command you can enter at the lilo prompt to correct this. Could someone please enlighten me. Cheers, BJ

Now I just wish I could remember the brand. I'm not keen to buy Diamond again after their complete lack of Linux support on my last purchase.

Missing hdd

10 Jul '00

Another poser for the smart ones out there. :-) When I boot from a floppy I can see all my drives but booting from the /boot partition one of my IDE channels is invisible. The bios sees it but Linux does not. It isn't reported in the boot message that flashes past at break neck speed! I presume this is a kernel thing but the kernel image on the floppy should be the same as the image at /boot. They were both created when I installed, I haven't been fiddling, honest guv! Cheers, BJ

ALUG put back
by MJ Ray 10 Jul '00

10 Jul '00

Heh, typical. When I return to my office having just put the meeting back a week because no-one had objected, I didn't think there was sufficient time to publicise it, let alone organise it properly, then I find that some people have preferred to keep it this weekend. DOH! Well, sorry to those few, but it was remarkably quiet before that, so ALUG 13 is on Sunday 23rd July at 1400 in Union House at UEA. A full announcement will follow just as soon as Martyn can confirm the speaker and any facilities needed to me. Hopefully some posters will be made as soon as possible and people can help put them around local computer shops and community notice boards. MJR, again picking up the torch for an ALUG meet

I've strayed, but come back to it again now that my email has hit preposterous. The reason I don't use slrn is its scoring isn't as good ;-) > You obviously aren't addicted to games :) Mmmm... would people be up for a dumb netgame at the next ALUG or the one after?

Folks, I just logged onto our firewall box for my periodic peruse, and I noticed that the /var/log/messages file, created on 28 Jun is 0 bytes long. All the permissions, ownership and so on seem to be ok, and it certainly used to log stuff. Any ideas as to why it should stop logging? I'm a bit concerned about this... -rw-r----- 1 root root 0 Jun 28 00:00 messages Also, how do I force an archive and compression of a log file? Cheers, Laurie.

I do find the adaptive scoring in Gnus helps me find topics I'm interested in, as it learns as I go along (scary, huh?).

What's a good basic X news client? KRN is pretty basic Netscape is well Netscape really... It must support multiple nntp servers though! Don't really want to use a console but I will if I have to. Opinions please. BTW its nice to be using Linux for just about everything now. I might even ditch MS soon and just leave it on the kid's box. Cheers, BJ

Even though I'm posted all over mailing lists, websites and newsgroups, I don't get that much spam. When I do, the combination of Gnus's adaptive scoring and the gnus-junk-complain command are quite effective in dealing with it. What do others use to block spam on Linux?

Isn't it a better move to try for the Linux Professional Institute exams rather than tying yourself to one vendor? (Monopoly is what we're trying to get away from, right?) LPI is backed by several distributors, including RH it would seem: 1.8. I am confused about Red Hat's connection to LPI. Don't they have a competing certification? Yes, they do have their own certification program. When Red Hat started to develop their Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) program, there were no other existing Linux certification programs and LPI did not yet exist. Now with LPI's emergence, Red Hat is participating in LPI's Advisory Council and staying in touch with what is happening. They are continuing development of their own program and are watching the evolution of LPI to see if or how the programs may or may not complement each other. You can find more info on LPI at pretty much any major Linux show and online at http://www.lpi.org/ On a related point that I think some people here might be interested in, SuSE have just appointed http://www.computerpark.co.uk/ as their first UK training representative.

Gentus/downloads and update on 'rodney'
by John Woodard 09 Jul '00

09 Jul '00

Update on my system. I have Gentus Linux 2.6 up and running on 'rodney' at last. The 675Mb download took over my only link to the outside world for about 30 hours but Windows IE5 and Gozilla managed it without any hitches, except I had the download manager set to redial to a 1p per minute number instead of my 0800 access so I've got to stump up for 11 hours of it at 1p/min. :-( Gentus found my ATA66 controller and promptly kernel panicked, bugger. After much jiggling about with drives, my 17Gb ATA66 Maxtor positively will not reside on the same channel as my 40Gb ATA66 Maxtor, strange. Anyway configuration is now as follows you'll see why its a little awkward: UDMA33 channels IDE0 AOpen 10X DVD IDE1 HP 24X4X4 re-writer IDE3 LS120 IDE4 250Mb Zip ATA66 chanels IDE5 Maxtor 17Gb ATA66 (Win 98 boot) IDE6 IBM 37.5Gb ATA66 (MP3s etc.) :-) IDE7 Maxtor 40Gb ATA66 (More MP3's etc.) IDE8 Segate 6Gb UDMA33 (Linux) hdh1 25Mb </boot> hdh2 [Linux extended] hdh5 128Mb <swap> hdh6 5846Mb </> All this dangling of a 250W power supply! We have removed our central heating system because the power supply glowing is plenty to heat the whole neighbourhood. Gentus seems to be RH6.2 optimised for Abit motherboards no extra goodies unlike Mandrake. But it works so now all I need is some SCSI storage to complete my project. :-) Now the problem I have is the dreaded LI at the lilo prompt. Lilo resides in the MBR of the windows boot drive. Apart from the obvious linear option has anyone got any ideas because I'm fed up with booting from a floppy. Cheers, BJ

It's due to be 16 May (eek!) in line with the "third Sunday in each month" meeting policy. Before I left in somewhat of a hurry for Germany, I did leave details of the meeting with someone (/me glares) with the hope that they'd pass them on. I can move the meeting back a week if needed (and I suggest that it probably is), but I need to know before Monday. > Information for October 2000 issue: How about: Meets on the third Sunday of each month, usually. Check website for times and venues. I was very impressed with the range and quality of Linux magazines available in Germany, who surely must be a long way ahead of us in Linux adoption judging from that. If it can be mirrored in the UK, that's surely a good thing.
