Gentus Linux
by John Woodard 05 Jul '00

05 Jul '00

Those of you who were at the last meet at Syleham will recall the difficulty I had getting Linux to install with my Abit BE6 motherboard's ATA66 IDE controller. Gentus Linux http://www.gentus.com/ seems to be an answer to this problem, a Red Hat based distro from the makers of the offending motherboard specifically targeted at the ATA66 IDE controller problem. I'm downloading it at the moment 675Mb over 56k modem link! So anybody trying to give me a voice call expect an answer sometime after Euro 2004. :-) Cheers, BJ

Hi, With regards to the ongoing discussion of the anglian.lug.org.uk web site, would there be any objections if I moved the site (and DNS) onto my own server which can then be updated as and when either by myself or anybody that wants to add anything? I need to start filling up my lonely 17Gb hard drive with something! ;) Regards, Martyn

Last Alug's photos on-line.. + SuSE presentation
by Martyn Drake 25 Jun '00

25 Jun '00

Hi, I've stuck the most recent photos of our last Alug meeting on my own, Red Hat server box running Zeus at:- http://www.bleeding-edge.net/alug/photos If things should go ahead for a meeting on the 19th July at UEA (at 2pm as a rough guide), Roger Whittaker has stated that it is very possible for him to do it at that date and time. If we need to move the date forward or backward, I'll contact Roger and let him know. Regards, Martyn

Administrivia: List Outage
by MJ Ray 23 Jun '00

23 Jun '00

There is an electrical shutdown at UEA this weekend, so the Student Union mailserver will be offline for the duration. This happens once a year and should not actually be visible other than a slight delay on list traffic (but I'm just announcing it so that you know why it's slow). If it's like last year, services may be restored by Sunday lunchtime. MJR

Hi folks, Firstly, for those that witnessed the death of my laptop on the last meeting - it's now been replaced by PC World with a spanking new one and hope this one doesn't die on me (at least for the next three years until I buy a new laptop!) Secondly, I'm going to get in contact with Roger Whittaker from SuSE to arrange the presentation for our next meeting. I'll need to know the date and time (and room number at the UEA) and I'll will definately go and book it and get confirmation. Regards, Martyn

How do I get rid of empty 15Mb Partition please?
by Terry Filby 22 Jun '00

22 Jun '00

Am getting on very well with Mandrake Lnx4Win - Linux on windows partition - but, on one of my previous abortive attempts to put Linux on a separate partition, I couldn't delete everything, and, despite going into Fdisk on Windows and in Linux I still have a 15Mb empty Partition. I have a 4.3 Gb HD with two Fat 16 partitions - 2047 on C:, 2063 on D: The empty partition is on D:, I have System Commander 2000 with graphic representation of the HD, and you can see the errant partition, but, if I try to amalgamate it in D:, it's got to be a Fat 32 drive, which I don't want. Any suggestions please? If I haven't made it clear enough, please e-mail with any queries. Everything works ok as is, but I don't like having 15Mb doing nothing that I can't delete! Terry

Cambridge Linux user group
by Adam Bower 22 Jun '00

22 Jun '00

Hi all, I just found this in cam.misc thought you may be interested it will start around midday. Don't know where/what CB2 is though any ideas? I will try to find out later if poss. Hello everyone Richard Smith, of Cambridge Linux User Group, calling in. (our website is www.cam-lug.org.uk ) We have got a "Linux-fest" combined with "Installfest" this Sunday. The venue is CB2, where we will have the use of the basement (that's not as bad as it sounds - it is done-up for drama, poetry readings, recitals, etc!) This will be the second "Installfest" held by the group. The previous one last year was a great success, with a few people just turning-up and the CLUG group having a good chance to network computers together, do installs, get specialist software "up", etc. 'fraid we have all been busy doing our things, so here I am thinking "oh my god, got to put out some publicity fast...". So, if you want to bring along a computer and install Linux on it, that's the purpose of the "Installfest" part of the event. General advice: - definitely, make a backup of everything valuable on the computer - all you documents and so on. Sod's Law says if you don't make a backup, something is sure to go wrong! - evaluate the two main ways to put Linux on a system for the first time. One is to partition the hard disk, so that an unused portion becomes separate partition(s) for the Linux system. The other way is to install a separate hard disk dedicated to Linux. The latter is probably an attractive option if you already have a lot on you computer. Oh groan - I'm not even sure how much space a Linux distro needs these days - it's easiest to do a "full install", which takes up a couple of gig's, but a lean install will fit on just a few hundred meg's. I hope to be doing a quick presentation on the programming language "C". You may know that C is the "native language" of unix, and has been adopted for general use across quite a range of programming. It is used for major algorithm-writing now in mathematics (trust me - that's good!), science and engineering - which is where I met C. I will be outlining just the "special" parts of C - the ones which cause either a deep fear or euphoric liking for the language (there isn't much in between!). A week or two of BASIC at school is intended to be plenty enough grounding for this talk. Demo of Zeus things,
by Adam Bower 17 Jun '00

17 Jun '00

Hi all, Not at the meeting on Sunday but maybe at the next one would any of you like a demo of some of the Zeus software? I would probably be able to bring a fair amount of kit to do a load balancer demo, a webserver demo and also could demo our new product Zeus MHE (Mass hosting edition) which is designed for ISP's to use as a managment tool. If you think this is a good idea then let me know and I will see what I can work out. I have an old 2gb disk with redhat on and I can boot it from my windows disk using loadlin. Using this you can then mount the windows disk if you need access to it. This prevents the risk of causing any problems on my windows disk which contains a lot of my research work. The Best Possible Linux Laptop Solution (Personal Use)
by Tatsuhiko Maekawa 16 Jun '00

16 Jun '00

Hullo I am thinking of getting a new laptop, now that everything becomes so INconvinient ever after I left the UK - and miss my lovely Siemens Nixdoft computer. (Tokyo sucks!) My question: which one's the best? Give your wishful thinking please. List of my considerations: - Main use is "web development" and "Palm Development" - Might need to use both "client" and "server" dually. Maybe enough to run JavaBean and Servlet (argh). - Require Windows - preferably better if Windows run in Linux (using VMWare, for example) - No DVD necessary - Size doesn't matter, and I really don't care. - Available companies: All Japanese companies you can come up with + Compaq + Dell + Gateway. ----- Tatsuhiko Maekawa [Network Integration Dept. News from a Traitor!
by Terry Filby 10 Jun '00

10 Jun '00

I'm very much a devotee of Linux, particularly so since Andrew installed Debian on my computer at the Aylsham meet. My trouble is that I still don't really understand partitioning and lilo, so my attempts to install Linux myself have been doomed to failure. Until, that is, I got Mandrake 7.0 De Luxe, which must be the easiest distro now available. I started to try to install it in the usual way with the program automatically doing the partitioning - all went well, until, like all the other distro's I've tried before, it didn't boot, but, on looking more closely, I saw that the partion that it was on, originally 2063Mb was now 2071Mb! How did that happen! So I tried the easy way, installing it on the same drive as my Windows 98SE, in dos. And it works! Of course, it's much slower than a 'proper' Linux installation, but at least I now have KDE et al in a form I'm much more sure about! Terry
