Linux Tie
by Terry Filby 10 Jun '00

10 Jun '00

Saw the ad in the Joff Magazine and sent for the Linux Tie with lots of little Tux's on it, it came this morning. One to wear at the meets? Though, unfortunately I can't manage the next one, pity, because Sylham is nearer to Beccles than UEA. Terry

What's just happened...
by MJ Ray 08 Jun '00

08 Jun '00

Hi, In case you're just wondering what happened, UUEAS (ie the stu.uea.ac.uk domain) just put its new mailserver in place today. It means that minimalist is no more, but the list is hosted on the new system. It also means: If you only got digest versions, you need to go to the web address that was given in the last post and reselect that (everyone's on the normal form to begin with, I'm afriad). If you've been trying and failing to get off of this list, it should now work ;-) We'd be sad to see you go, though. You can do some more generally clever configuration via the list interface. Archives are automatic. Things that look like list server commands or spam will be trapped. You have to post to the list from your registered address. You might have to reset your filters. The service is still beta <g> I think that's it. Here's hoping it works better than the old one! -- | MJR "Everything is planned, from -- crime to leisure time."

Delusions?
by MJ Ray 06 Jun '00

06 Jun '00

I thought this might entertain some of you. From Issue 15 of Brave GNU World, <URL:http://www.gnu.org/brave-gnu-world/issue-15.en.html>: """This part was originally triggered by an advertisement of the German "Wirtschaftswoche" (translates to "Business Week") that spread big posters all over the city of Hamburg, Germany stating "Every Generation has its role models." The background picture shows stone busts of Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte and Bill Gates. If it weren't for Bill Gates I would have considered this ad to be a bad joke; but as this is the "Business Week" and Bill Gates is the richest man on earth, I must assume they are being serious. What does it say to declare these people role models? Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte were might-ridden conquerors and egomaniacs whose wars caused suffering for hundreds of thousands of people - even if their own population might have seen a slight advantage for a short amount of time. At some point both of them lost contact with reality and deemed themselves almighty. Caeser declared himself dictator and was murdered whereas Napoleon bit off more than he could chew and was exiled. Had there been more space on this picture I guess Attila and Ghengis Khan would also fit into this row pretty well. All of these persons are very much historical and they certainly changed the face of the world. But role models?""" -- | MJR "Everything is planned, from -- crime to leisure time." Samba help needed
by John Heaser 02 Jun '00

02 Jun '00

I need help (paid) with getting an HP Netserver to act as a shared file area between an HP Unix box and W98 PCs. The Netserver has been loaded with Mandrake from the recent PC Plus cover cd but then things came to a halt! The plan is to mount the Linux box as an NFS partition to the HPUX and use Samba to make it visible to the W98 PCs and perform the unix to windows ASCII end of line conversion. We are just trying to make it easy for PC users to get at data extract files that are created on the HPUX. The customer site is in Bedford and I would like to prototype the set up here before delivery by using another Linux box (I have Red Hat on a PC) to represent the HPUX. The work can be done at Diss or in Norwich. Commercial rates can be paid to someone proficient in Samba etc. -- Regards John Heaser [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECTs of "unsubscribe alug" and "subscribe alug-announce" ] [ to listserver(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

PPP: ping/dns OK but no FTP/telnet...
by Neil Sedger 28 May '00

RE this problem (hmm about an eon ago due to a broken modem...) I found the solution on the RHA support web forum. Go to /etc/ppp/options and add novj novjccomp in there. Works fine now. Currently using linuxconf, with a masq 'gateway' working. Next step is using wvdial (so it redials when busy) and then dial-on-demand. Nice. Introduction / OT LDAP, SAMBA, Netatalk, PAM
by Joe Frost 16 May '00

16 May '00

Hi, Just a note to introduce myself and ask a question... My name is Joe Frost and I work at a software company based near Saxmundham in Suffolk. We have been using Linux for around 5 years (first Slackware for DNS and Sendmail, then later RedHat 5.1 for QMail, and now RedHat 6.x, Caldera OL 2.x, Turbo Linux 6, and Cobalt appliances for development). I'm the IT bloke so I have very little to do with coding but get involved extensively in the network, hardware, and OS side of things. If you want to know more about the company's products then email privately as I don't want to spam the list with that stuff. Now the OT bit... I've recently taken it upon myself to try and come up with a Netware 4.x replacement based around Linux (probably RH 6.x), and am looking at using OpenLDAP and PAM for user authentication against the directory to support services like SaMBa, Netatalk, POP3 and IMAP. I've got quite a bit of stuff working but I would be interested chatting to anyone who has experience with this kind of thing. Hope to speak to (at least some) of you soon. diald problem..
by Neil Sedger 15 May '00

15 May '00

Hi all I've got ppp working fine, using scripts linuxconf generated. But diald doesn't like it. It tries to bring up the connection when it should, but then bombs out when starting pppd: May 15 00:55:32 passage pppd[5515]: pppd 2.3.11 started by root, uid 0 May 15 00:55:32 passage pppd[5515]: Using interface ppp0 May 15 00:55:32 passage pppd[5515]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS2 May 15 00:55:35 passage pppd[5515]: Remote message: ^@ May 15 00:55:36 passage pppd[5515]: Peer is not authorized to use remote address 212.41.40.37 May 15 00:55:37 passage pppd[5515]: Hangup (SIGHUP) May 15 00:55:37 passage pppd[5515]: Modem hangup May 15 00:55:37 passage pppd[5515]: Connection terminated. Normally (if I run pppd from the shell without diald) I get the 'Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS2' line then it tells me local and remote addresses and off I surf... any ideas? Checked the diald/ppp howtos and FAQs and they don't mention it...? Mandrake on Laptop
by Rob Smith 13 May '00

13 May '00

Helo, As you may remember my last e-mail I was considering installing Mandrake on my laptop, well now I've done it and I have to say I am very impressed, it auto detected all my hardware, even my PCMCIA combined Lan/56k modem and installed the correct drivers (I was very wary of this). Now however I have a problem..... The contrast is really bad. It is far too bright and the icons look really washed out. I have tried turning brightness down/contrast up but to no avail what should I do?? Some info. Should relevant adverts be posted to the list? Let me know what you think... Andrew. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 11 May 2000 13:36:06 +0200 (CEST) From: Kangaroot <peter(a)kangaroot.net> To: list(a)kangaroot.net Subject: www.kangaroot.net Dear, Kangaroot launched the largest European Linux shop on april 12 and of course we wanted to tell you all this. We aim to be the best, biggest and cheapest Linux shop for European users, and certainly for enthusiasts like you. We're selling all major distributions, applications and games, books and gadgets (tuxes, tshirts, jackets, ties,...) Please pay us a visit, and do tell your fellow LUG members about Kangaroot. But we're not only here to advertise for ourselves... we're sending you this mail to outline our upcoming plans as well. 1) Soon, we plan to launch a complete european online Linux community, for which we're looking for partners. We will offer users the possibility to ask questions about linux, in their own language, which will be answered in their own language. But for this we need a couple of partners in each region, to help us out...these people will receive the necessary information on how they will be rewarded. If you, or one of your members, is interested to become a partner please mail us on partners(a)kangaroot.net 2) If your LUG has a website, please contact us for more info on advertising, bannerexchanges, registration on our LUG pages, etc... you can contact us also at partners(a)kangaroot.net 3) In the very near future LUGs will receive a group-code which members can use when ordering at our store. By using this code points will be added to the LUG - account for which many goodies for the whole crew can be purchased! A page will be published one of these days to subscribe but you can mail us allready and we'll manually put in your data. We hope you really like the ideas... and are welcoming you in our store.
