Hi all, Just checked http://www.anglian.lug.org.uk and Andrews got the map up. The friendship club is at junction of Yaxely's lane, Pound Lane and Mill road on the top right hand corner of the map. Any further questions for me to answer? Hi all, I'm going to cancel the venue for Alug now due to a lack of enthusiasm. If I'm wrong then let me know asap, It's just only two people have muttered anything to the effect that they are coming, Let me know though if its just everyone going on holiday/home in their uni easter break. I'm sorry if I sound pessimistic but it looks as though the current part of the mail archive is broken and everything looks grim. I'll start by giving you a resume of my computer in case it has a bearing on the trouble I am having with Caldera OpenLinux 2.2. Computer: Packard Bell Executive 200MHz (Upgrade - CenterHauls x86 Family 5 Model 4 Stepping 1 200MHz MMX), S3 (I think) 1Mb Graphic Card, 48Mb Physical Memory, American Megatrends Bios, version 100.05CP0R, dated 4/15/96, 4.3 Gb Hard Drive partitioned by FDisk into 2 equal size partitions - C and D, FAT16. Have no trouble with installing Linux, just rebooting it. Tried several times with PartitionMagic on Linux disk with no success and couldn't partition on D as I wanted, so bought on-line System Commander 2000, it too has, so far, been unsuccessful but there are signs (encouraging?). I was able to partition D, it said Linux is bootable, which it still isn't and also said that I must be sure to select Root Superblock choice - I would, but have no idea where this is located. In both cases, with PartitionMagic and System Commander, when I try to reboot Linux, it goes to the first OpenLinux page that I first saw when I installed it, with Boot at the top and (sometimes) a second line, but the next thing ALWAYS happens! It boots back to the opening Bios first-page. What am I doing wrong or is some part of my equipment not compatible with Linux? If you need other info, let me know, and I will do my best to supply it. Thanks, I hope you can help me solve this, all I wanted to do is to have a look at Caldera Linux!. ALUG6 Debian?

OK so the question has to be asked: Can someone bring along the latest Debian code? If 2.2 isn't out by the day, can someone master a cd of the latest unstable? The thought of installing "Slink and a half" then upgrading to unstable over a weekend doesn't settle well in my stomach. Needs to be CD - I'll not have my PC. James. Hope to come to your next ALUG meeting if possible. I live in Beccles, Suffolk and are urgently in need of Linux help. If I bring my computer and leads, what else do I need to bring? Monitor, etc. (I only have a small car!). I'm a computer-mad OAP, but absolutely clueless with Linux. If anybody lives near to me I would very much appreciate help and I would, of course, pay for your trouble, I shouldn't imagine, for an expert, it would take long. Hope someone can help Thanks Terry T C Filby, 98 St George's Road, Beccles, Suffolk NR34 9YA Tel: 01502 715989 alug-digest(a)stu.uea.ac.uk wrote: > This is a digest of the list alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk > The views expressed are those of the author, not necessarily > those of UEA or UUEAS. > > 5 messages in this digest: > for testing only don't read it > Re: [ALUG-DIGEST] Tue Apr 4 22:59:03 2000 > Re: [alug] for testing only don't read it > Instant reboot, I just won't have it! I've only just joined ALUG because I'm an absolute beginner in Linux and am having great difficulty, so it's disappointing to see ALUG is not exactly thriving. Trouble with gimp
by Doug Tulloch 17 Mar '00

17 Mar '00

Hi from another newbie! Does anyone know anything about gimp? I can't get it to do even the simplest transformations. Trying to rotate a selection, for example, produces no result other than a lot of hard disk activity which appears quite rapidly to fill up the partition in use, whether home or root; the only way out that I have found is to log off and start again. Is this a known problem? I'm using Linux-Mandrake 6.1, the Macmillan distribution, on a Dell which has an Nvidia TNT2 graphics card. -- Doug Tulloch [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECTs of "unsubscribe alug" and "subscribe alug-announce" ] [ to listserver(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

NT boot.ini
by Anthony_Sale＠proconassoc.co.uk 17 Mar '00

17 Mar '00

Stu I use the NT boot loader on my laptop. To boot Lilo from the NT boot loader you ned to do the following enter dd if=/dev/hd?? of=/ntdrive/linux.cnt bs=512 count=1 (where /dev/hd?? is the partition you installed lilo to and /ntdrive points to the nt C: drive) Edit your boot.ini file to look like the following (this configuration has linux as the default startup) [boot loader] timeout=30 default=c:\linux.cnt [operating systems] c:\linux.cnt="Linux" multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00" multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00 [VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos The boot/ini file has the system and readonly attributes so you will need to enter attrib -s -r c:\boot.ini before you edit the file. After wards enter attrib +s +r boot.ini to reset the file attributes. Hope this helps Regards Tony Sale "Stu" <stu(a)mgstu.co.uk> on 03/16/2000 10:29:58 PM Please respond to alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk To: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk cc: (bcc: Tony Sale/Technical Consultants/Procon) Subject: [alug] NT boot.ini Hi what would I put in nt boot.ini in order to get linux loaded, I put lilo in the partition, as opposed to MBR, as Id rather use the NT boot loader... ?? Linux Cobalt Raqs - bloomin' marvellous ;)
by Martyn Drake 14 Mar '00

14 Mar '00

I just want to say how darned nice these machines are. I've been playing with a demo machine we've got in the office to decide whether it's worth using these as part of a co-located/reseller solution. I want one for myself :) It's running Linux 2.2.12C3 with an 18Gb hard drive, along with 512Mb of memory. Suprisingly, it's only using IDE for it's hard drive interface. Everything is administered via the web interface, but you also have telnet access along with root privaledges (although they say you could invalidate your warranty by modifying system files). It looks like it's running a customised version of RedHat. It will also allow installation via the web of .pkg files. The web server supports sanboxed CGI, Frontpage extensions, and plenty of other goodies. Web stats and quota management are all handled via it's web interface which customers can access via their control panel. The biggest surprise was it supports the Arkeia backup client which we use with a massive tape library system. The user can backup their own data, or the ISP/host can do it for them. The unit itself it's tiny - we could get loads of these into our racks in Telehouse. Despite the IDE hard drive interface, I'd have to say this is a pretty darn excellent package for those that want to do things on the cheap and not bother about too much of the setting-up side and maintenance. 9/10 Regards, Martyn -- Martyn Drake | WEB http://www.ision.net.uk Systems Administrator | PHONE +44 (0)20 8293 7000 Ision Internet plc | FAX +44 (0)20 8293 6000 -- Martyn Drake | WEB http://www.ision.net.uk Systems Administrator | PHONE +44 (0)20 8293 7000 Ision Internet plc | FAX +44 (0)20 8293 6000 [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECTs of "unsubscribe alug" and "subscribe alug-announce" ] [ to listserver(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

High loads
by Dan Jones 10 Mar '00

Thought you guys might enjoy seeing the highest load ever for a single website on a dedicated server (well that I've seen anyway) 11:37am up 28 days, 1:17, 3 users, load average: 50.17, 35.08, 24.95 At lunchtimes, the average is higher. This site gets on average 20 hits/sec for reference, and a a intesnive CGI/MySQL beast. Heardware is dual PIII-550, with RAID 5 SCSI and is a HP Netserver costing approx 7,500 quid. It also has around 640Mb of RAM, and a triple redundant PSU. We've already said it needs a new box. And for client confidality reasons, I'm not permitted to say which site it is, sorry! Experiences of Helix?
by Green J M K 09 Mar '00

OK so we were bombarded with news releases from HelixCode announcing their distribution of GNOME yesterday. It looks real nice, I just wondered if anyone had any experiences good or bad with it (the Helix download processes and the environment itself)? Also, anyone know if an gnome app written under this release/1.4 release will still work under October GNOME? James. New Web Host
by Laurie Brown 09 Mar '00

09 Mar '00

Folks, After many months of fruitless searching in the UK for a sensible (either) managed server or co-location deal for a box running Linux, we've given up, bitten the bullet and gone for a 2meg pipe of our own. We intend to offer domain hosting, web hosting using apache, email, php, MySQL, Perl, CGI etc. running on a SuSE 6.3 box for a basic price of a tenner-a-month. We want to use SuSE because a) we're familiar with it, and b) we want to do a trading partnership deal with SuSE. There are some complications, however! The principle one is lack of time on my part, and the fact that I'm out of the country. Another is that although we have a pretty good idea of what we need, and how to do it, some knowledgeable help would be appreciated. For instance, we will be going SCSI and RAID5 areas in which I have no experience on Linux. Lastly, this is a shoe-string start-up, and we can't afford to pay mega-bucks for an "expert". So, bottom-line: if an ALUG member near to Ipswich and willing to exchange some help and experience in exchange for beer and some free domain hosting or whatever is able to help, please shout. The kit will be here late next week, and it's a ground-up build. I have spare PCs to simulate dial-in, the DMZ and a network behind it for NAT and so on. I only have a short window to do this, as the pipe is scheduled to arrive at the main office in mid-April. Oh yeah, if anyone replies, please take this out of the list, to cut down the noise thereon. Cheers, Laurie. MS Word with Linux
by Green J M K 08 Mar '00

Hi there, OK so I need to produce a lengthy report with screenshots and diagrams. I need to write it on Linux and produce the final product in Word for printing on an NT network. I'm wondering here how stable Word97 is running with WINE? StarOffice cannot get full compatibility even with straightforward text/styles I've found, so that's not a reliable option. Options anyone? Mine is 60.91 after the Frontpage extensions running on a Debian box went haywire. We have now mounted the dump of 'top' on our wall as a record of the momentous occasion. Make sure you monitor, shtml.exe on any machine running FP to ensure it doesn't go tits up. Ruddy Microsoft crud :( Regards, Martyn [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECTs of "unsubscribe alug" and "subscribe alug-announce" ] [ to listserver(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

Mail Archive Update
by MJ Ray 07 Mar '00

Hypermail.pl is now handling most of the mail archives. I'll not bother converting the first few unless someone can think of a really good reason. I'll now be adding to them monthly, I think. They remain at http://www.mth.uea.ac.uk/~h089/alug/list/ while the main site is at http://www.anglian.lug.org.uk/ MJR [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECTs of "unsubscribe alug" and "subscribe alug-announce" ] [ to listserver(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]
