Hi guys, I'm feeling a little out of my depth here on this one. This box was built two Autumns ago (1998) and has only had a monitor change since. Using RH6.0. Tonight, on two seperate occassions, between 30 seconds and one minute into my dialup Internet connection, my machine has totally locked up. The only commonality has been the dialup and corresponding disk activity (sendmail and fetchnews kicking in). I have had an in-between dialup connection that stayed up fine. The screen freezes. No mouse, no keyboard. The four consoles do not respond. No beeps occur on keyboard buffer overflow as you'd normally expect. The modem stays on-line, but Rx/Tx lights go dead. The hard disk stops rattling completely (I can normally hear it all the time). I have 64MB RAM, 128MB swap. gkrellm shows swap to be at or less than 1/4 used, RAM between half and 3/4 used. I run GNOME 1.0.53 and E 0.16 and on both occassions had two Eterms up. Absolutely nothing out of the normal, bar having 'daytime' uncommented in /etc/services (I was trying out a networking code sample from a book). I have now commented it back out. I was not accessing audio/cdrom devices, nor floppy (LS-120). I am using kernel 2.2.12, and have been for smoe time. The only thing that comes to mind is possibly swapfile corruption, but I don't even know if it's possible with Linux/ext2 or whatever. Unless the problem is an apparently random hardware fault. I must admit since using GNOME again this past few days memory has been a little lacking. Ideas? New users distribution

SuSE is a solid distro. SuSE never seems to be mentioned in some circles, but its pretty damn good and worth at look at. It seems to be on par with Slackware in that lots of people use it for their server operating systems. Oh well... my two pence worth!! Trouble with gimp

Is this your home directories and CVS repository? I can recommend StorageTec tape silos!! We back up 15PetaBytes of data on these!!! :-) Seriously, DAT's are fine. At home I back up (using BRU I must admit) across multiple DAT's. If you get a DAT drive with an Autochange it'll do this automagically for you during the night. Any half decent backup software will support the autochanger. Some of my FTP Server's here at work I backup to DLT's. These are fine for smallish file servers - well 40GB on one tape. Have fun... I guess I better get this back on a linux related theme ;).. does anybody have any suggestions for a reasonable backup devices other than dat under linux ?? we need to back up about 15 gig, dosen't have to be than fast, (well overnight will do!).. it seems that dat's are now becomming a little small ;).. please, no suggestions of 15 jazz drives ;).. Hey all, Okay, I am stuck in this uni machine. It uses gdm to login, and presents only KDE as the possible environment. But hark! /usr/X11R6/bin/wmaker is present! I tried killall -9 kwm && wmaker (as per a suggestion) but it simply logged me out. Anyone got any bright ideas? (I have a related question for those who answer correctly.) James. Redhat user login prob!

Hi, I have a slight problem in that when a user tries to login to my redhat 6.1 system they get kicked straight back to the login screen. Only the root user can login! How can I fix this? Apache: Is this a bad trick?

Any apache gurus on the list, I've been doing some site development, and rather than have to tweak all the addresses, I added 127.0.0.2 sitename to the /etc/hosts file and defined 127.0.0.2 as a virtual host. I don't know why, but I feel that's a bad thing to do: is it? Hiya! I can recommend Star Office. Sun sent me a CD last year - the installation ran perfectly. You could certainly put it on any 'users' desktop running on SuSE and fool them into thinking it was something from the Redmond (un)stable. Did anyone else see The Money Program on BBC 2 last night?

If so what did you think? Didn't it sound as though some very devoted Linux guys took over the editing of the program? For those who didn't see it, well unfortunately it doesn't seem to look as though it will be repeated. But the article was around 20mins long and made comparisons between Linux and NT. They featured Powys council who have deployed Linux boxen as dial on demand routers/mail servers for their local community's drop in centre type things, and saying that they chose Linux as it's cheaper than NT and easier to support. They had interviews with Linus and they featured Linux Expo in New York (I think it was the one but it may of been some other Linux show in the States) They made a comparison between the cost of MS Office and StarOffice. They said about how IBM supports Linux, they featured Oracle, they had lots of other things I can't remember, But best of all they seemed to be saying that Win2K is a bit pants and that maybe you should consider Linux solutions instead of deploying expensive MS solutions. It was really cool it seemed as though they were trying to put a bit of a spoiler on the launch of Win2K and this was on British TV! It just goes to show how Linux support & advocacy has grown in the past year. If anyone does find that it will be repeated (maybe on News 24?) then let me know as I would like to see it again. Hey there, So I'll install Debian 2.1, then go-line and do apt get-update or whatever it is. What should I expect to get? I see GNOME 0.30 is in stable, i obviously need something newer (and stabler) than that, same with E0.14, Apache, PHP3, etc. Or do I have to wade into unstable and watch my phone bill go into outer space? sendmail question

Hi peeps I have a sendmail problem. I have at home a network of 2 Windows PC's and an IP masquerading Linux gateway. The Linux box acts as an SMTP server for the rest of the network. This works ok excewpt, sometimes sending mail fails, as the receiving machine tries to look up gateway.glovercc.freeserve.co.uk. I know I'm being lazy here. When I do dial up with Freeserve, everything works fine, as they trap everything heading from a host to an SMTP server and process it themselves. I have recently started using ClaraNet. What I need to know, is how do I set up sendmail to caryy on receiving mail for my local network, but for any mail heading outside, to go via Claranet's SMTP server? I hope that made sense, as I'm sitting here at work at 3:15am, and it's not what I'd describe as concise :-) Any help grately appreciated.
