I have in front of me single CDs from LinuxMall.com of TurboLinux 3.6, LinuxPro 5.4, SuSE Linux 6.2, Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 and Slackware 7.0. I also have RedHat 6.1 which should return to me before too long and am lead to believe that more CDs may be on their way. If you want one of these, please email me and I'll post them out. Alternatively, if ALUG5 (would 2 or 3 organisers make themselves known to the list please?) is soon, I'll bring them along. SuSE 6.3

Hi Chaps... I've got SuSE 6.3 running here. Got the boxed copy with all the install disks. Lots of new stuff. Nice new Pentium III and ~20GBytes of disk to play with in the morning! When's the ALUG? It arrived today! (SuSE 6.3)

And I must admit to being extremely impressed not only with the amount of stuff included within the package (it comes on 6 CDs plus one freebie evaluation CD making 7 CDs in total as well as a whopping huge manual), but the manual is very readable too. I've asked whether it's possible to obtain a couple of extra sets for the group, or failing that, if they're offering any discounts. I'll keep you posted. As soon as we've got the next meeting in the bag you can be sure that I'll be struggling to carry all this stuff with me! Corel Linux - Partitioning Problem

Maybe one of you can sort out this one I have 3 hard drives in my machine. So when I did the install I went for the manual partition option rather than the take over my hard drive option don't want to delete the wrong drive!) I have a 2gb drive I wanted to setup Corel Linux on. So for my main partition I selected 1800mb (leaving 200mb for the swap partition) but the partition manager shows it as a 900mb partition. The same thing happened with the swap partition. It seems what ever I put in as my partition size gets halved. Anyone know what's going on? Corel Linux

Just installed Corel Linux from the PC Plus CD! It took me just 20 min to install to a KDE desktop that is actually quite user friendly. After all the hype/rhetoric documented install problems, I must say that I'm pretty impressed. This is a real step in the right direction for a realistic usable desktop solution. I'm sure that now a viable alternative to MS desktop OSs is just around the corner. I won't be ditching RedHat just yet though because I'm just getting comfortable with its foibles and idiosyncrasies but if I was to recommend a distro to a complete newbie it would have to be Corel flavoured. Just my 2pence worth. Any more info on the next meet? Insecure $ENV{CDPATH}

Does anybody know what to do when you start recieving Insecure $ENV{CDPATH} when trying to open a file, and subsequently can't set any environment variables in bash? Linux Network Programming

leafnode and slrn problems

Hi, I have just installed leafnode 1.9.4 from source on a slackware 7.0 box. All went fine, but whenever I use slrn to read news slrn seems to believe that all newsgroups are new newsgroups. Hence all subscriptions are lost and a screen full of new newgroups is presented. Any ideas why? Presumably leafnode after an amount of time will no longer consider certain newsgroups to be new? More Debian Problems

Sorry guys I now have a couple more questions, all help and suggestions gratefully received. No. 1 I now have Exim working as my MTA but the reply-to on the header is listed as adamb@bagpuss (where adamb is my username and bagpuss the hostname) how do I fix this? No. 2 My sound card doesn't work :( (but the tv card does and looks better than it did in windows) I rebuilt the kernel as normal and built the driver in (es1370) and no sound, this used to work with all other distros but not Debian. If I cat /dev/sndstat I get device not found. Any ideas? I have also tried modularising sound in the kernel but no luck. No. 3 In enlightenment I use the scrollwheel button on my mouse to flip between desktops by adding the line ZAxisMapping 4 5 this worked before the upgrade to Potato and E16.3 but now nothing. I hope you all had a good new year, and I'm looking forward to the next alug when/where is it? somebody mentioned that it would be at Laurie's hotel again is this so? Debian problems

Hi guys, Thought I'd get this question in before everyone gets hammered (or not as the case may be) tonight. I just update to Debian Potato with apt-get dist-upgrade (8 hours on dial-up) and I'm now having a couple of problems. The first is that when I upgraded it only downloaded kernel 2.2.12, why is this as I'm sure 2.2.13 was listed in the mirror and is there anyway to just apt-get the patch? the other main problem I'm having is with xdm when I exit the xserver, ps ax reports xdm as running but the svga server doesn't respawn leaving me with a blank logon screen. Also has anyone got recommendations for a MTA to use with Debian is exim any good? and what about news I figure I will be using slrn to read news but do I want to use suck or leafnode? is there anything better? If you can help guys I will be very happy as I may be able to wave goodbye to Windows 98 for the new year. Have a good time tonight whatever you do. ICMP Failed Checksums

Has anybody come across a situation whereby the kernel generates something along the lines of in /var/log/messages:- ICMP failed checksum from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is a local (in the non-private rage) IP address. I'll be darned if I can figured out why the kernel is chucking these out. If necessary, I'll have to do a kernel rebuild. Apache guru wanted

Hi there, Anyone running apache with a domain name that has multiple sub-domains (Gareth->Linux.com, desktops.linux.com.... rings a bell)? I've got www.linuxnewbie.com working fine with documentroot pointing at /www/lnc, and I'd like to get my.linuxnewbie.com pointing at /www/lnc/my. Problem is very basic: my.linuxnewbie.com/images/ and my.lnc/whatever no longer work for obvious reason (unless I put horrible symlinks in). I gather this can be overcome with the RewriteEngine/RewriteRule directives, but Apache complains they're not recognised. This has to be a fairly basic thing to do. Anyone able to help? Domain names OT

I know this is off topic but a good friend has asked me to register a .co.uk domain name for him. Where is the best place to do this? Didn't one of you work for an ISP in Norwich somewhere? Any advice appreciated etc. He also wants a file and print server to replace an old Mac box that has died. Samba? I think so. RC scripts

Hi all, Since I'm coding LNC every day it makes sense to get apache going on boot. However, trying to get this going through RH6.0's rc scripts is proving less than entertaining :-( In /etc/rc.d/rc.local I have put the following in: if [-f /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache ]; then /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache start fi /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache appears to be the same as other init scripts but obviously catering for apache. The variable pointing at the executable is fine, but then I don't think this is the problem since I don't receive any messages whlie booting. In fact if I didn't know better, I would think that the code above isn't being executed whatsoever. Before you ask, ls -l /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 504 Oct 8 23:46 apache Can anyone make sense of this? PCAnswers CD solution?

I don't think I've seen this news posted yet: "Anyway - all the CDs are being replaced free of charge to the readers, with a few extra goodies on there to make up for the hassle. I was up in Bath sorting this wee mess out yesterday, and the new CDs are going to be ready to go by the end of next week." Is that a good solution?
