More Debian Problems
by Adam Bower 03 Jan '00

03 Jan '00

Sorry guys I now have a couple more questions, all help and suggestions gratefully received. No. 1 I now have Exim working as my MTA but the reply-to on the header is listed as adamb@bagpuss (where adamb is my username and bagpuss the hostname) how do I fix this? No. 2 My sound card doesn't work :( (but the tv card does and looks better than it did in windows) I rebuilt the kernel as normal and built the driver in (es1370) and no sound, this used to work with all other distros but not Debian. If I cat /dev/sndstat I get device not found. Any ideas? I have also tried modularising sound in the kernel but no luck. No. 3 In enlightenment I use the scrollwheel button on my mouse to flip between desktops by adding the line ZAxisMapping 4 5 this worked before the upgrade to Potato and E16.3 but now nothing. I hope you all had a good new year, and I'm looking forward to the next alug when/where is it? somebody mentioned that it would be at Laurie's hotel again is this so? Debian problems
by Adam Bower 02 Jan '00

02 Jan '00

Hi guys, Thought I'd get this question in before everyone gets hammered (or not as the case may be) tonight. I just update to Debian Potato with apt-get dist-upgrade (8 hours on dial-up) and I'm now having a couple of problems. The first is that when I upgraded it only downloaded kernel 2.2.12, why is this as I'm sure 2.2.13 was listed in the mirror and is there anyway to just apt-get the patch? the other main problem I'm having is with xdm when I exit the xserver, ps ax reports xdm as running but the svga server doesn't respawn leaving me with a blank logon screen. Also has anyone got recommendations for a MTA to use with Debian is exim any good? and what about news I figure I will be using slrn to read news but do I want to use suck or leafnode? is there anything better? If you can help guys I will be very happy as I may be able to wave goodbye to Windows 98 for the new year. Have a good time tonight whatever you do. ICMP Failed Checksums
by Martyn Drake 29 Dec '99

29 Dec '99

Has anybody come across a situation whereby the kernel generates something along the lines of in /var/log/messages:- ICMP failed checksum from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is a local (in the non-private rage) IP address. I'll be darned if I can figured out why the kernel is chucking these out. If necessary, I'll have to do a kernel rebuild. Apache guru wanted
by jg＠cyberstorm.demon.co.uk 24 Dec '99

24 Dec '99

Hi there, Anyone running apache with a domain name that has multiple sub-domains (Gareth->Linux.com, desktops.linux.com.... rings a bell)? I've got www.linuxnewbie.com working fine with documentroot pointing at /www/lnc, and I'd like to get my.linuxnewbie.com pointing at /www/lnc/my. Problem is very basic: my.linuxnewbie.com/images/ and my.lnc/whatever no longer work for obvious reason (unless I put horrible symlinks in). I gather this can be overcome with the RewriteEngine/RewriteRule directives, but Apache complains they're not recognised. This has to be a fairly basic thing to do. Anyone able to help? RC scripts
by jg＠cyberstorm.demon.co.uk 13 Dec '99

13 Dec '99

Hi all, Since I'm coding LNC every day it makes sense to get apache going on boot. However, trying to get this going through RH6.0's rc scripts is proving less than entertaining :-( In /etc/rc.d/rc.local I have put the following in: if [-f /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache ]; then /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache start fi /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache appears to be the same as other init scripts but obviously catering for apache. The variable pointing at the executable is fine, but then I don't think this is the problem since I don't receive any messages whlie booting. In fact if I didn't know better, I would think that the code above isn't being executed whatsoever. Before you ask, ls -l /etc/rc.d/init.d/apache: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 504 Oct 8 23:46 apache Can anyone make sense of this? Mandrake logon problems?
by John Woodard 01 Dec '99

01 Dec '99

I just installed Mandrake 6.1 off the latest PC Answers coverdisk. All went well, couldn't tell the difference between that and RH6.0's installer (apart from the total lack of X server setup, expect you're meant to do that after you have a working console). When I get to the standard logon prompt I input root and enter as usual but it doesn't give me a password prompt just another logon prompt, hence I can't get into the system. This is also the case with a normal user and when I try booting from a floppy instead of the hdd (lilo is on the mbr). I can get into a bash prompt by using lilo single but that still gets me nowhere, I tried changing the root password and running lilo again from there. Any ideas? Could the good folks at PC Answers have slipped us a lemon I wonder? And of course a major blow for Linux on the UK Desktop. People picking this up to have their "chance" with Linux will install, become confused, confounded and depressed, and chuck "Linux" because it was crap. They may then present their experience to others and disuade them from installing it. The question is how many of these pour souls will think that the PC Answers disk is exactly the same as all Linux installs...
