Hello All I've just got a copy of this months PC Answers (Christmas 1999) and discovered to my delight that Linux Mandrake 6.1 and WordPerfect 8 are on the cover disc. Floppies
by Green, James M K 23 Nov '99

Hi, There are distributions that fit onto a single floppy - just don't expect to do much with them... (search Freshmeat.net) They might not have bash (more used shell), and they certainly don't have X so you can forget about GNOME/KDE or WM/E/whatever. Quite whether your 386 machine will survive the month after december I haven't the foggiest, and you'd have to bear in mind that with 8Mb RAM you'll (AFAIK) be lucky to erun X no matter what distro you use. If I were you I'd grab RedHat from somewhere (any vers) and do a custom-install. That way you can cut out devel packages (gcc and the like), GNOME and KDE, Apache, Postgres and numerous other things you simply won't use and it should fit into 120Mb. I know it can be done - I know someone who did it. And FWIW, dual-booting is quite easy and comes up as as an option in the RedHat 5/6 installer. Let us know the outcome... -- James Green jg(a)linuxnewbie.com Site Manager LinuxNewbie.com > -----Original Message----- > From: Al [mailto:BioHazzard@mad.scientist.com] > Sent: 23 November 1999 11:26 > To: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk > Subject: [alug] Floppies > > > Hello, > I've been lurking for a few months now, and I've seen > references to various > distributions. > Unfortunately I haven't been brave enough to try and run two > OS's on my main > machine as I use it for work. > I have got sitting in the loft an old 386 machine that is > gathering dust. it > has a tiny (read 120mb) HD and and insignificant amount of > ram (8mb) but I > was wondering if there is a floppy distribution that might > fit. I read a comparative review of a few distributions the other day and Mandrake came out a long way ahead for the novice user. Do any ALUG members use it? If so, is it really that good? On another distributionish note, I'm starting to make Debian packages of some stuff I find useful. It's not that hard and I know there are quite a few debianised ALUG members, so maybe we should think about doing a alug-deb archive somewhere? Lost parallel ports? and DOJ judgement
by John Woodard 12 Nov '99

I upgraded to RH 6.1 after the last ALUG meeting (pretty impressed so far) and my lp ports have disappeared. I have twp parallel ports lp0 and lp1 RH's print tool fails to find them. Dos however has no problems with either lpt1 or lpt2. I have tried spp, epp and ecp ports in the BIOS to no avail. RH 6.0 had an option to set up your printer during the install routine which is no more in 6.1. This shouldn't be a problem for me because RH supply a nice graphical tool for the purpose (printtool) but as I said before printtool can't find my ports. Any ideas folks, is there something I should have done on install (yes I know I could/should have used the RH cd as a coaster and installed Debian but IMHO Debian's installer is not for the faint hearted). Any help appreciated. Changing the subject what impact do you think the DOJ judgement against MS will have on the Open Source community? These reports have been coming out for months now, but I am very worried that I haven't seen many 'good' reports of Win2k becoming reliable. The DoJ is reportedly pondering whether to make Windows open source. Quite what they call open source is open to debate, but if it means something like the GPL the title "The World Is Not Enough" springs to mind. Why? Because if programmers get their mits on the source code, it will branch off into hundreds of versions, none of which will work properly (I can do C, but I bet I could break the Linux source code by altering it - and Windows is far more complex) and the MS-official version will spread like wildfire. How many organisations/countries are deploying Linux because Windows is too expensive? Open Source Windows and all hell will break loose. Quite whether anyone would deploy any Windows version not officially MS-sanctioned is another matter... There should be a file called 'lp.o' in /lib/modules/<kernel-version>/misc. Try typing 'modprobe lp' as root, and with a bit of luck the kernel will load the module for you. If there is an lp.o, and the kernel refuses to load it, the there must be some parameters you're not giving it, although my kernel seems to be loading the module of it's own accord when required. If the kernel will load it but it still won't print, then triple check that pc style hardware is enabled. If there isn't an lp.o, then it's *definately* recompile time I'm afraid :-/ Anyway - sleep deprevation, HTH, Paul [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECTs of "unsubscribe alug" and "subscribe alug-announce" ] [ to listserver(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ] ********************************************************************* * Please visit the web site of the Financial Times at: * * http://www.ft.com * * * * This E-Mail is intended for the use of the addressee only and may * * contain confidential information. ISA Modem

Hello All I've decided it's about time to use Linux to connect to the net rather than Windoze, but as always there's a problem. Instead of a nice pukka proper modem I've got a PCI winmodem which I understand won't work with Linux. I can't afford a new branded modem at the moment (I thought about a US Robotics 56k external) but I know where I pick up an internal ISA one very cheaply. Has I understand it I should be able to use this with 'generic' settings. Can anybody throw anymore light on this for me please, or at least point me in the right direction ;¬) Thanks. -- Daniel Smith [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECTs of "unsubscribe alug" and "subscribe alug-announce" ] [ to listserver(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]
