This wearable is well worth seeing. I think I saw it and had a go of it (might have been a different one) when I was doing a course at Essex University. One of the best parts of the course was a discussion towards the end about Linux on Palmpilots. I had one of the TRG superpilot memory boards and downloaded ucLinux onto it. Didn't do anything (no shell or GUI) but it did boot the kernel. Excellent stuff. Volunteers Wanted

Hey all, As some of you will have seen in ucol, I am currently building a site called LinuxNewbie.com (LNC) which will be hosted by VA Linux Systems. The site features (will:) a lot of information, including reviews, previews, tutorials, editorials, etc., plus a database of various things a newbie might want to know. But we have a problem. The project team as it stands numbers five including myself. Over the past few days, we have been making enquires regarding new staff members, and if all the applicants are accepted (looking good, Andrew :) we will hit eight, plus one more possible. I would like to hit fifteen by launch date. The current potential staff are offering articles on popular stuff like mail readers, networking, setting up X, etc., and indeed we still are looking for more like this. Part of the permanent staffers duties will include maintaining a daily news section which is like slashdot, only more Linux-centered which particular focus on newbies. We also want to see contributing authors submit their work, not neccessarily permanent staff. So we have some vacancies which need filling. We want you (or people you know) who have experience in the following areas: Site-Specific: - html - GIMP or other O-S graphics packages deemed suitable for the job at hand (e.g. POV-Ray) - PHP3 - MySQL - testing pages once ready (while on-line and during our pre-publication period of peer-review) Content: - authors with opinions, knowledge, ideas on Linux and O-S. - Section-maintainers (e.g. "Which Distrbution", "Community", etc.) - News from around the web plus our own and visitor-sumbitted stories - /if you think of it and we don't have it, come and do it/ There is going to be some serious amount of work over the next two or three weeks, and the site will be better with a large team churning out high-quality content. Are you interested? Send (privately) me your details, toegether with anything you'd like to help out with from the above list, plus anything you might want to do yourself; include your experience, any web-refs you may have, and anything else you believe may be worth us knowing. StarOffice printing?

Does anybody know how to get my printer a Canon BJC 4100 to print from StarOffice 5.1? It prints just fine from the default print queue under Gnome, gEdit etc. do I have to get a specific driver for StarOffice? Printer set-up in SO only seems to support PostScript printers but has a default printer option which I thought might point to the default print queue lp...whatever. How do I get this damn thing to work, it's frustrating because I've been using the Windows version of StarOffice for a while and prefer it to the MS bloatware suite and it would be very useful to actually do something productive under Linux for a change. Hey there, I've been following the list since its inception, in the background. I think its time I got involved, see if I can help at all. There's a couple of us at the Electroacoustic Music studios at UEA trying to run Linux boxes for synthesis and composition (nightmare). I run RedHat 6.0, and am about to try to install debian m68k on a mac powerbook 165c (THE nightmare). Willing to help organize meetings at UEA or elsewhere, although I have 0 strings to pull. Path and Gnome launching

Couple of small problems. Firstly could someone tell me how to add a location to my path every time that I boot. I need to know which configuration file buried somewhere in /etc I presume and what I need to add to it. Like adding a statement to the autoexec.bat file in dos (sorry I know it's a taboo word). I think file holding the path variable is /etc/profile but I'm unsure how to add to it. The file has the line PATH="$PATH:/usr/X11R6/bin" is this my path or an addition to it? In dos each location in the path is separated by semicolons i.e. path=c:\;c:\dos;c:\windows;c:\windows\system ... etc. How do I do this in Linux? Secondly I want to create a launcher icon on the panel in Gnome to launch StarOffice, this launches from a script which can be achieved in a terminal window by ./<nameofscript>. What do I need for the properties of the launcher, like how do I specify a path for the script? I tried just entering the path of the script in but it doesn't work although double clicking the script in Gnome File Manager works a treat. GTK Mozilla

Hi all, I'm trying to make mozilla (nightly build) see libpixmap.so for the gtk+ themes engines. On startup, however, it just says that the file isn't found. I've tried symlinks from the cwd and /usr/lib, /usr/local/lib to the file/directory, to no avail. I've even run an strace on it but it doesn't mention getting that particular file. All other gtk apps work fine with the themes. Any ideas? James. With regards to the generous offer from SAMS Publishing, I'm going to recommend the following books for the group: 1) Linux: A Network Solution for Your Office (published July, 26th) - Sounds like a good book for those considering Linux in their business 2) Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours (published in June) - A good book for beginners and comes with the Caldera 2.2 distribution that includes a cut-down version of PartitionMagic and BootMagic 3) Linux Unleashed, Third Edition (published August 1998) - A good all-rounder and includes a copy of RedHat 5.1 Let me know what you're opinions of the above are, and if all is agreed, I'll relay these choices over to Don at SAMS Publishing. Themes for E?

I've downloaded some themes for E and have some obscure errors appear when I try to use them. I get messages like: ****************** Warning: unable to determine what to do with the following text in the middle of current Text Definition: (or WindowMatch) _FILL RULE _SCALE (this is sometimes blank) will ignore and continue... ****************** There are 3 choices ignore, exit, and restart window manager. Selecting ignore brings up similar errors and the theme tries to start but only partially loads? I'm stumped anybody know what is causing this? * List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk At ALUG2 I was moaning about my difficulties with the Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live beta drivers in RH6. I'm really please to say that I have managed to get the damn thing to work. In the beta driver rename sblive.o-2.2.5 to sblive.o-2.2.5-15(or currently installed kernel version RH6 comes with 2.2.5-15) it's read only so you need to change the permissions (don't forget to change them back). In the install_sblive script change the line that reads `V2=2.2.5' to 'V2=2.2.5-15' (or what ever kernel version you are using). Run the amended install_sblive script with ./install_sblive. Modify the /etc/conf.modules file so it reads alias sound sblive pre-install sblive insmod soundcore post-remove sblive rmmod soundcore install sblive insmod -f sblive some of this will already be present from the install script. The line 'install sblive insmod -f sblive' forces the module to load even though its not the correct kernel version.
