Hello folks, Some *very* interesting news here all the way from the USA :) SAMS publishing (who publish those meaty tomes on all sorts of computer-related stuff - I remember my SAMS HTML and CGI book with fond memories) have approached me with the offer of three free SAMS books as well as the opportunity for anybody here to become a technical editor or contributing author to their Linux series. As you can see below, there is quite some choice of titles they're working on :) If anyone is interesting in the group obtaining these books - and perhaps would like to offer suggestions of what we're going to do with them when (and if) we get them, then take a look a www.mcp.com and we'll take a vote on the most popular titles mentioned. I'll then ask Don about getting them and we'll take things from there. * List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk At ALUG2 I was moaning about my difficulties with the Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live beta drivers in RH6. I'm really please to say that I have managed to get the damn thing to work. In the beta driver rename sblive.o-2.2.5 to sblive.o-2.2.5-15(or currently installed kernel version RH6 comes with 2.2.5-15) it's read only so you need to change the permissions (don't forget to change them back). In the install_sblive script change the line that reads `V2=2.2.5' to 'V2=2.2.5-15' (or what ever kernel version you are using). Run the amended install_sblive script with ./install_sblive. Modify the /etc/conf.modules file so it reads alias sound sblive pre-install sblive insmod soundcore post-remove sblive rmmod soundcore install sblive insmod -f sblive some of this will already be present from the install script. The line 'install sblive insmod -f sblive' forces the module to load even though its not the correct kernel version. When this isn't available, they call in the spotty kid next door. Windows, imo, has done a good attempt at producing configuration tools for particular jobs. Unfortunately, when it doesn't work, it general has dire consequences, and since the registry isn't a dream to administer, the average user is doomed to reinstallion and that, in the words of Microsoft themselves, increases the "TCO". Kernel install?

After a few re-installs of RH6 after installing a new kernel I thought I'd ask where I was going wrong. This is what I've done so far: cd /usr/src<ENTER> "obvious what this does" mv linux linux.old<ENTER> "rename my old linux directory which is actually a symbolic link to a directory named linux-2.2.5-15?" tar xzf *path*/linux-2.2.10.tar.gz<ENTER> "recursively untar and ungzip a directory named linux under the current directory" cd linux<ENTER> "obvious" make config *or menuconfig/xconfig*<ENTER> "using the howto for guidance - sensible" make dep<ENTER> "dependancies?? - don't really understand this" make clean<ENTER> "cleans up the config file? - not sure" make bzImage<ENTER> "compiles a compressed binary image - I think?" make modules<ENTER> "not sure got this of a newsgroup" make modules_install<ENTER> "as above could be dangerous?" "this is where I start to get confused!" cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz<ENTER> "copy my new compressed binary image to the path in my lilo.conf which is another symbolic link to an image file named vmlinuz-2.2.5-15 don't know if this is significant?" lilo -v<ENTER> "run lilo in verbose mode to load it?" reboot *or shutdown -r now*<ENTER> "obvious" I now get errors on boot up telling me that bootmap?? or something similar points to the wrong kernal version and some other errors which I can't remember (not a great deal of help that I know :-} ) lots of red text though! Scanners in Linux

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Has anybody had any experience with flatbed scanners in Linux My cheapo parallel port jobbie won't work in a real OS so I'm going to replace it with a nice shiny new one. I'm thinking about a scsi model, because I think I read somewhere that they are more likely to work in Linux. Any ideas on which scanners work in Linux or which to avoid and is there a Linux equivalent to TWAIN? I'm only looking for a low end A4 device for general photos and OCR stuff, not too expensive around 150.00 is my limit. HELP!

OK I've got to confess I haven't 'played' with Linux for over two months now! I've been using, dare I say it Micro$haft Windoze 95. I had installed Red Hat from the PC Plus cover disk onto a third hard drive but some how I've lost the duel boot options, can anybody tell me how to create a boot floppy so I can get Linux back?
