* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Hello All I was unable to make the first meeting :o( due to other commitments and I have only just read my messages since the start of May, looks like I missed a great day! I have two questions for you all and then I will go back to lurking for the time being:- 1) When is the next meeting? Soon hopefully! Any locations in mind? I'm happy to travel anywhere and can give lifts, I'm in Braintree in Essex but don't mind going a bit out of my way to pick people up if required. 2) This is the big one! I've been asked to set up a mail server at work, my boss isn't as IT literate as she likes to think and can't understand why I don't just walk into PC World buy some software and have it up and running in ten minutes flat. I have decided to "stick it" on a Linux box. Now I need help as I've only installed Linux once (Red-hat from PC-Plus) and due to lack of time didn't get to play with it properly. The Network server is Novell Netware 3.2 (at least it not Gates!) and the clients are all Win 95 or 98. I need a mail server that will periodically dial up the ISP (Pipex) and then download and distribute the mail to all of the clients. Any mail that is sent from the desktop will go to the Linux box and wait until it dials up. I suppose the desktop mail client will be Micro$haft Outlook as that's the main software that all of the duffers I work with can understand. Can anybody Help? Please. I have not personally experienced any bugs, but the drivers need "tweaking" after installation in order to get them to work, this will all be sorted out in time. the Quake3 test client (as far as I know) only runs under linux atm.. and I have tried it with a P166MMX, with 64Meg EDO ram, the V3, and a slow hard disk, and it is very impressive ;)... and Quake2 is unbelieveable fast at 1240x1048 !!! does that answer your question ?? True Enlightenment is a bit(!) flakey, but hey it's version 0.15 beta. I'm running SuSE 6.0/6.1 everywhere else now. No problems at all, other than that all .rpm based software seems to be built for RedHat machines. I've not had to compile a single program since installing deb. You want enlightenment? no problem: apt-get install enlightenment. You want gnome? apt-get install gnome-core gnome-session etc... It'll download the packages if you've not got them locally and install them. nice. If you've got a fast internet connection (as in ISDN router or faster) then you can even install it over the network, two boot disks and you're away. Linux.com up and running :)

Only complaint is that some of the pages appear to be wider than 800x600, but that's me just nitpicking. Anybody try Netscape 4.6 under Linux as yet? Seems a bit faster at rendering pages under Windows but so far I've not gotten as far as installing it under Linux. Paul, In the directory RedHat/images (IIRC) there is boot.img. In DOS: cd dosutils rawrite.exe When prompted, for a disk, for the boot image enter: .\images\boot.img Under *ix: dd if=/mnt/cdrom/images/boot.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=72k That's you boot image taken care of. Information curtesy RedHat 5.1 installation manual. FWIW, my recent mboard (Award BIOS) won't boot the cd either, even though it recognises their is one at boot time. I am currently still in the process of working through the changes in RH6 from 5.2. Some of the stuff they've done is quite amazingly odd and has caused a large number of frustrating hours in #linuxhelp, and I'm not through with it yet. I'll give you a tip: when you compile your own kernel, rm /boot/System.map - you'll get errors on reboot about modules having the wrong kernel version number otherwise, also cp the asm headers from the linux kernel source into /usr/include/asm/ (rm'ing the symlink first) else virtually nothing compiles. Gimp-1.1.5 still doesn't compile here, claiming libgimp/libgimp.h is non-existant (damn well does exist). Overall, progress is slow. At least I backed everything up to my windows HD.
