What I meant was that if anyone has downloaded Caldera or Redhat 6.0 and has them in an format suitable for burning in 98/NT that I could copy them onto my hard drive on Sunday. Then I should be getting a pile of CD-R blanks around Wednesday time and could then provide burns for people as they require them. No CD-Rom

So there's a lesson in relying on university machinery for a evening's work. :(( If, by some wierd chance no-one has tried to burn a CD themselves by Tuesday morning and thefore kept the software, I'll try again then. Otherwise we'll have to wait until our next meeting, and I shall quite possibly not be at uni for that so I won't be able to make a CD anyway. So there you have it. RedHat on the way

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Hello guys, OK, I just made enquires with my collegues upstairs (I work for the uni computing service so I had to be careful what I d/l) and it seems that unofficial policy on downloading large files from anywhere is 'bugger the cost'. Therefore, RH6.0 iso is currently standing at some 37Mb so far in just under ten minutes. With a bit of luck I can get this HP DirectCD to create a working CD, and Debian and Caldera offerings will conclude the Great Download of April. I strongly advise however to bring along you own distribution CDs - assume (as this is the first time I've mastered any CD) that my lot will fail. I'm looking to try out latest RH, Debian and Caldera shortly. Right, I'll do my Java assignment while I wait... Quickies time

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Hi all, Quick update: I forgot to enquire about trains last night but will do so in next 24hrs. I now have three TDK CD-R discs to master. Being on a uni NT4 machine I need .iso mages of RH6.0, Debian and Caldera so ucol has a plea for local (ac.uk) mirrors for these. Respond please! I can get more CD-Rs from my housemate, although at what price I don't know; the TDKs I got from our ESE stores cost GBP1.20 each. Rip off. Due to problems getting Apache/PHP3 running here plus university work I haven't managed much on the website as yet. Bear with me on that one; but I do at least have an ugly first draft using SSI/PHP3 which grabs /. and freshmeat headlines purrrfectly :) I may be seeing someone (another student) to come along. I forgot and told him it was Saturday not Sunday and he said he couldn't make it. I'll correct him if I see him - he's a Londoner so it would be a while-at-uni arrangement I think ;-) Oh, and could someone do a demo of GIMP at the meeting? I'm a Photoshopper and I'd quite like a conversion course... GIMP-1.1.4 crashes quite quickly here. Also, a look at X equivs of oft-used Windows apps could be useful - a feature I'd like to develop on for the website. Particular emphasis on Office apps, mail and news I think. Tin "sucks" as they say in #linuxhelp. Right, I got a few wired probs here with Linux, plus a Java assignment to do for Friday, so I'd better hop to it. Need lift for the meeting..

Time to spread the word

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk I wrote this before the email flurry that just took place. Guess it's still useful, though: Dear all, There are now but five short days until our first meeting. Now is the time to spread the word and try to encourage people to come along. We need to make posters (has someone done this? We could use a PostScript file), email friends, arrange transport where needed, etc etc. I think having a rough idea of numbers and compiling a list of what equipment is being taken is a very good idea. So, here's a basic "to-do" list: 1. Email friends and ask them if they want to come to the meeting. If so, perhaps arrange to demo more than one thing on a box and perhaps arrange to car-share. 2. Email A.Savory(a)UEA.ac.uk with names and details of equipment and software to be demo'ed. Bear in mind the notes about taking power supplies, etc. I assume Laurie doesn't want us to blow the fuses, so there will probably be some restriction on how many machines are in action at once. 3. Print off a poster (file location tbc) and stick it in your office window, on a nearby noticeboard, in the back of your car, on a passing cat, whatever. 4. If you need to be collected from Woodbridge rail station, email Laurie and ask nicely. The 1205 arrival is the one for most people, I think. 5. If you can help with Laurie's ISDN+Firewall setup, email both him and Andrew. I suspect doing 5 will make 4 more likely ;) 6. Polish kit and presentation skills until Sunday. Interestingly, I've just heard that Kingfisher (owners of Comet etc) have entered the Free ISP market. Let's see if we get another Linux-friendly one... MJR. sig TBA. ADSL update

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Further to my note of the otehr day. If I use my 'spare' host IP that BT gave me, the oepration of the net is distinctly flaky. However, I find that I can use my Demon IP (158.152.9.237) over the ADSL network. It gets masqueraded in the normal way, but appears to be perfectly reliable. My main m/c now has three IPs. One for demon, one for ADSL and one for the internal network. I have also set up masquerading from the rest of my local net, but I have not checked my filter rules all that thoroughly yet. Using ADSL

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk BT's ADSL --------- What do you get? --------------- 1. A permanent internet connection. 2Mb/s download, 256Kb/s upload. 2. Static, masqueraded IP. The addresses used are in the 192.168.*.* range. 3. ADSL shares your phone line with voice traffic. You can use voice and data at the same time. 4. Two wall boxes, each about 10" square and about 1 1/2" deep. One is the analogue/data splitter, te other is a 'modem' that provides a utp connection to your network. BT also provide a PCI ethernet card (ne2000 clone, RealTek RTL8029 chip) and a cable. 5. Lots of BT 'constent servers' that no-one in his right mind would want to look at. 6. Access to the whole internet. BT provide web proxies that you can use. What do you not get? ------------------- 1. Mail services. You must register with some ISP for that. 2. Usenet. How do you get it? ----------------- 1. You have to live in the right area. 2. You *must* be running W95/W98. If not, BT won't even talk to you. 3. Connect your web browser to www.btinteractive.com/Registration/. For this site you will need Flash Graphics. BT *say* that you have to be running IE to use their site. I was totally unable to get it to work with IE, but Netscape worked fine. This web site is one of the worst designed and most annoying that I have seen in a long time. 4. Go through the rather long-winded registration process that will include, inter alia, downloading a program (W95/W98) that will examine your machine. You then mail the output of this program back to BT. 5. In due course BT will come and install the equipment in your premises. 6. Use the BT supplied floppies to configure your W95/W98. Donwload about 30Mb of other software and install it. You can now get at the BT content services. Apart from access to the BT servers you can ignore all their instructions. For Linux configuration, see below. Network Config -------------- You get a 2-bit (4 address) network allocated to you. BT tell you about two of the addresses, but not the other two. The address is of the form 192.168.x.y with a 30-bit netmask. 192.168.x.y+1 is the BT 'modem' 192.168.x.y+2 is the address BT tell you to use for your machine 192.168.x.y+3 is the broadcast address. 192.168.x.y is a spare host address and can be used if you have two machines on your network. BT's name servers are on 192.168.0.* and 192.168.1.*, so that rather rules out using the 192.168.*.* private address range on your home network. You just don't know who else might be using your addresses and causing conflicts. However you can still use 10.*.*.*. Routing ------- In /etc/networks create entries for your local network and for the BT network. loopback 127.0.0.0 localnet 10.0.0.0 BTnet 192.168.x.y In /etc/hosts create entries for the BT hosts, e.g. 192.168.0.18 dns1.BTInteractive.net alderney.BTInteractive.net 192.168.1.5 dns2.BTInteractive.net 12.168.x.y+1 gate.BTInteractive I assume that you have just one ethernet card in your machine. If you have two then it becomes easier to isolate your private network from the public one. At a suitable place in your rc scripts add: /sbin/ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.1 broadcast 10.255.255.255 netmask 10.0.0.0 /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.x.y+2 broadcast 192.168.x.y+3 netmask 192.168.x.y /sbin/route add -net localnet netmask 10.0.0.0 eth0 /sbin/route add -net BTnet netmask 192.168.x.y eth0:0 /sbin/route add default netmask 0.0.0.0 gw gate.BTInteractive eth0:0 With two ethernet cards replace eth0:0 by eth1, or vice versa. In /etc/resolve.conf put: nameserver 192.168.0.18 nameserver 192.168.1.5 Security -------- You are now directly connect to the internet, so security is a major issue. Make sure all user accounts have *good* passwords. Use shadow passwords. Run pwck and grpck regularly. Disable system accounts such as bin, sync, daemon etc. by putting an 'x' in the password field of /etc/shadow. In /etc/inetd.conf comment out the entries for chargen, finger, netstat, systat, bootps and tftp. Put sensible values in /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow. A good place to start is to put ALL:ALL in hosts.deny and then to enable just those services you want, e.g. smtp, in hosts.allow. When a connection is denied run a script to log the event; for instance, in hosts.deny put the line: ALL:ALL:spawn ( /usr/bin/logger -p auth.debug "%a %d %c %h %p %s")& Implement packet filtering to discard any packets that look suspicious, e.g. those trying to use your machine as a gateway. Also drop any packets to the local net that try to go out through the BT gateway; any packets from the gateway that purport to come from the local network. If you are running a private netowrk you may want to nominate one machine as a masquerading gateway so that you can control access more easily. Update your Samba config to allow connections only to/from the local network.
