Time to spread the word
by Mark J Ray 27 Apr '99

27 Apr '99

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk I wrote this before the email flurry that just took place. Guess it's still useful, though: Dear all, There are now but five short days until our first meeting. Now is the time to spread the word and try to encourage people to come along. We need to make posters (has someone done this? We could use a PostScript file), email friends, arrange transport where needed, etc etc. I think having a rough idea of numbers and compiling a list of what equipment is being taken is a very good idea. So, here's a basic "to-do" list: 1. Email friends and ask them if they want to come to the meeting. If so, perhaps arrange to demo more than one thing on a box and perhaps arrange to car-share. 2. Email A.Savory(a)UEA.ac.uk with names and details of equipment and software to be demo'ed. Bear in mind the notes about taking power supplies, etc. I assume Laurie doesn't want us to blow the fuses, so there will probably be some restriction on how many machines are in action at once. 3. Print off a poster (file location tbc) and stick it in your office window, on a nearby noticeboard, in the back of your car, on a passing cat, whatever. 4. If you need to be collected from Woodbridge rail station, email Laurie and ask nicely. The 1205 arrival is the one for most people, I think. 5. If you can help with Laurie's ISDN+Firewall setup, email both him and Andrew. I suspect doing 5 will make 4 more likely ;) 6. Polish kit and presentation skills until Sunday. Interestingly, I've just heard that Kingfisher (owners of Comet etc) have entered the Free ISP market. Let's see if we get another Linux-friendly one... MJR. sig TBA. ADSL update
by Raphael Mankin 23 Apr '99

23 Apr '99

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Further to my note of the otehr day. If I use my 'spare' host IP that BT gave me, the oepration of the net is distinctly flaky. However, I find that I can use my Demon IP (158.152.9.237) over the ADSL network. It gets masqueraded in the normal way, but appears to be perfectly reliable. My main m/c now has three IPs. One for demon, one for ADSL and one for the internal network. I have also set up masquerading from the rest of my local net, but I have not checked my filter rules all that thoroughly yet. Also, my Win 3.1 machine (they do still exist) does not seem to fetch web pages ;-( ---------------------------------- 2 + 2 = 5 (for large values of 2) Raphael Mankin E-Mail: raph(a)panache.demon.co.uk ---------------------------------- [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECT of "unsubscribe" to this list and "subscribe" to ] [ alug-announce(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

Using ADSL
by Raphael Mankin 23 Apr '99

23 Apr '99

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk BT's ADSL --------- What do you get? --------------- 1. A permanent internet connection. 2Mb/s download, 256Kb/s upload. 2. Static, masqueraded IP. The addresses used are in the 192.168.*.* range. 3. ADSL shares your phone line with voice traffic. You can use voice and data at the same time. 4. Two wall boxes, each about 10" square and about 1 1/2" deep. One is the analogue/data splitter, te other is a 'modem' that provides a utp connection to your network. BT also provide a PCI ethernet card (ne2000 clone, RealTek RTL8029 chip) and a cable. 5. Lots of BT 'constent servers' that no-one in his right mind would want to look at. 6. Access to the whole internet. BT provide web proxies that you can use. What do you not get? ------------------- 1. Mail services. You must register with some ISP for that. 2. Usenet. How do you get it? ----------------- 1. You have to live in the right area. 2. You *must* be running W95/W98. If not, BT won't even talk to you. 3. Connect your web browser to www.btinteractive.com/Registration/. For this site you will need Flash Graphics. BT *say* that you have to be running IE to use their site. I was totally unable to get it to work with IE, but Netscape worked fine. This web site is one of the worst designed and most annoying that I have seen in a long time. 4. Go through the rather long-winded registration process that will include, inter alia, downloading a program (W95/W98) that will examine your machine. You then mail the output of this program back to BT. 5. In due course BT will come and install the equipment in your premises. 6. Use the BT supplied floppies to configure your W95/W98. Donwload about 30Mb of other software and install it. You can now get at the BT content services. Apart from access to the BT servers you can ignore all their instructions. For Linux configuration, see below. Network Config -------------- You get a 2-bit (4 address) network allocated to you. BT tell you about two of the addresses, but not the other two. The address is of the form 192.168.x.y with a 30-bit netmask. 192.168.x.y+1 is the BT 'modem' 192.168.x.y+2 is the address BT tell you to use for your machine 192.168.x.y+3 is the broadcast address. 192.168.x.y is a spare host address and can be used if you have two machines on your network. BT's name servers are on 192.168.0.* and 192.168.1.*, so that rather rules out using the 192.168.*.* private address range on your home network. You just don't know who else might be using your addresses and causing conflicts. However you can still use 10.*.*.*. Routing ------- In /etc/networks create entries for your local network and for the BT network. loopback 127.0.0.0 localnet 10.0.0.0 BTnet 192.168.x.y In /etc/hosts create entries for the BT hosts, e.g. 192.168.0.18 dns1.BTInteractive.net alderney.BTInteractive.net 192.168.1.5 dns2.BTInteractive.net 12.168.x.y+1 gate.BTInteractive I assume that you have just one ethernet card in your machine. If you have two then it becomes easier to isolate your private network from the public one. At a suitable place in your rc scripts add: /sbin/ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.1 broadcast 10.255.255.255 netmask 10.0.0.0 /sbin/ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.x.y+2 broadcast 192.168.x.y+3 netmask 192.168.x.y /sbin/route add -net localnet netmask 10.0.0.0 eth0 /sbin/route add -net BTnet netmask 192.168.x.y eth0:0 /sbin/route add default netmask 0.0.0.0 gw gate.BTInteractive eth0:0 With two ethernet cards replace eth0:0 by eth1, or vice versa. In /etc/resolve.conf put: nameserver 192.168.0.18 nameserver 192.168.1.5 Security -------- You are now directly connect to the internet, so security is a major issue. Make sure all user accounts have *good* passwords. Use shadow passwords. Run pwck and grpck regularly. Disable system accounts such as bin, sync, daemon etc. by putting an 'x' in the password field of /etc/shadow. In /etc/inetd.conf comment out the entries for chargen, finger, netstat, systat, bootps and tftp. Put sensible values in /etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow. A good place to start is to put ALL:ALL in hosts.deny and then to enable just those services you want, e.g. smtp, in hosts.allow. When a connection is denied run a script to log the event; for instance, in hosts.deny put the line: ALL:ALL:spawn ( /usr/bin/logger -p auth.debug "%a %d %c %h %p %s")& Implement packet filtering to discard any packets that look suspicious, e.g. those trying to use your machine as a gateway. Also drop any packets to the local net that try to go out through the BT gateway; any packets from the gateway that purport to come from the local network. If you are running a private netowrk you may want to nominate one machine as a masquerading gateway so that you can control access more easily. Update your Samba config to allow connections only to/from the local network. So, where now?
by Mark J Ray 20 Apr '99

20 Apr '99

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Hiya, Since starting the mailing list about 10 days ago, we've got a meeting organised for 2nd May, the domain name, some web pages, listings in some of the LUG indices, started dialogue with neighbouring LUGs, publicised ourselves a bit with a press release and doubled (when I last looked) our subscribers. But we've only just begun. So I'm writing yet another "TO-DO" list, as far as I see it. Feel free to dispute or add to this list, but I don't think anyone can deny that if we get the first few done, then we'll gain people and have no problem with the later ones. So, here it is: * Announce the meeting to uk.comp.os.linux and u.l.e-a (Andrew?) Include details of how to join this list. Feel free to copy the posting to any other local groups at your Service Provider. * Any members posting there (eg Me!) add the ALUG web address to their signature block that they use to post to news (yeah, I know they're crowded already). I think ALUG members are becoming more visible on u.c.o.l (although I could probably incite a flamewar on any given topic :P). * Anyone keeping some Linux web pages stick an ALUG link-back logo on them and add them to the ALUG links on the main web site (Andrew, can you add a few more categories? Damn, I'm asking you to do a lot!) * Discuss who's going to bring what to the meeting. Andrew, could you keep a (basic) web page about the meeting, with links to Laurie's site and details of who's bringing what? * Produce a poster that we can all post around our local areas. (I know some kind souls have offered to do this.) * In a week or two, start trying to work out a venue and date for another meeting. * Keep up the good work! Publicise, invite people, etc. Food for thought? -- MJR Please use the address in the Reply-To line at the top, if set. http://www.stu.uea.ac.uk/ http://stats.mth.uea.ac.uk/ http://www.anglian.lug.org.uk/ [ This email came to you via the Anglian Linux User Group list ] [ If you only wish to recieve event announcements, email the ] [ SUBJECT of "unsubscribe" to this list and "subscribe" to ] [ alug-announce(a)stu.uea.ac.uk -- We do need your support, tho' ]

Already downloaded the sources for an older version in the same series (eg compiling 2.2.5 but already have 2.2.2). What you should do is patch your kernel tree. See http://linuxpower.org/display_item.phtml?id=101 Installing perl modules? Try "perl -MCPAN -e shell" and let perl take care of downloading, compiling and installing dependencies. (I found that one while installing EP - which seems similar to PHP.) -- Mark. Mailing list fixed..

* From: "Martyn Drake" <martyn(a)drake.org.uk> Just to let everybody know that the new anglian(a)lists.lug.org.uk mailing list problem has now been resolved. As have the MX records for anglian.lug.org.uk and a few other odds and ends. If Mark Ray could either pass me a list of current subscribers to this list, I will ensure that everyone is currently subscribed to the new list. Otherwise to simply subscribe, send a message to majordomo(a)lists.lug.org.uk with "subscribe anglian" (without quotes) in the body of the message. I am the list moderator for anglian(a)lists.lug.org.uk, so any complaints, flames or otherwise should be addressed to me. Just a recap that that list is for discussion. I'm just wondering if it's worth asking lug.org.uk for an anglian-announce list as well.. M. Stealing members...

I've been quite impressed with www.cam-lug.org ;) Seriously, there is no reason why we should detract from the LUGs which already exist in the area. It was my perception that Cambridge is the only place definitely in our area to consistently support a LUG, and that seems to be of the "a few people go down the pub" variety. Regrettably, we clash with one of their meetings, but with them holding meetings every weekend, it was going to be difficult not to. We cover a wide area, so that we can hopefully reach some sort of "critical mass" can be reached more quickly. We already seem well on the road to having a few meetings organised. And as Linux grows, hopefully we will too, but that's not the end of the story. I quite expect, that as time goes by, the larger towns and cities in East Anglia may form LUGs of their own. I would hope that we can work together, have joint meetings and so on, but you have to realise that in a mainly rural area such as this, we are never going to have 100% coverage of these "metropolitan" LUGs. I can't really see King's Lynn, where I live, supporting a LUG in the next few years. So for many people, ALUG will still be the most appropriate LUG. Finally, I hope we will be a different type of LUG, a more co-operative one. Anyone who wants to help can, as we're trying to keep the centralisation of power to a minimum. When the last two links on the website go active, any member will be able to link pages in (eh, Mr Savory? I hope that was what you were planning ;) ) and I hope everyone will have something to say. Also, I hope our events can be a bit larger scale than most of the metropolitan LUGs... -- Mark. [kevin.taylor@ind.alstom.com: Re: Anglian LUG setting up]

* List: alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk Kevin Taylor of the Northants LUG raises some interesting points, I think. He's OKd me sending this on to the list. I'm in touch with linuxuk.co.uk now, waiting to hear about "Linux Day". ----- Forwarded message from kevin.taylor(a)ind.alstom.com ----- From: kevin.taylor(a)ind.alstom.com Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 09:02:17 +0100 Subject: Re: Anglian LUG setting up > I'm emailing you to ask what you're up to, to solicit any > advice you may have to offer and to invite any of your members > willing to travel to come to our meeting. I would say the main thing is keep the momentum going. I started the Northants LUG with a meeting of 3 people, including myself and a collegue from work ... I think you need to decide very early on about when to meet, and how often. We have a main meeting every 2 months (we have had 3 so far) - where I arrange a 'talk' to kick things off. We have just got to the stage where the people that regularly turn up would like to meet more often, so we have started a more informal 'interim meeting' in the months in between. I think you need to set the dates and stick to them, even if you only get a few people. My typical attendance is from between 5 to 8 people at the moment - but I have a few regulars and many more people on the mailing list. We meet at my house in Northampton, as I have a large(ish) lounge. This seems to work really well. I would strongly advise against doing anything that is money related - I do not charge entry, do not rent a hall, do not charge for coffee or anything - it is just completely informal. The other thing to do is get a web site quickly, and send its address to any lists of 'lugs' that you can find. Obvious ones to use : www.ssc.com/glue www.linuxuk.co.uk www.uk.linux.org www.linux.ukuug.org www.skygate.co.uk/linux.html www.redhat.com www.nllgg.nl/lugww www.lug.org.uk The last one will set up a .lug.org.uk internet domain name for you if you wish - even if you have web pages elsewhere - then he can do redirection for you. One final note - personally I would stay away from 'installathons' and advocacy - I just provide the group for existing users to come together - we are not out to convert other users on our own (yet ...) By the way - are you aware of Linux Day 1999 ? Contact Jono Bacon (jb(a)linuxuk.co.uk) for details if you are interested in taking part. Hope this helps. Keep in touch.
