It is on-topic, related, computer/software issue generally and also in this case corresponding and 2-way. My Internet experience in the West at times is comparable to female foeticide
by Krishna Birth 22 Jun '11

22 Jun '11

I believe that I am being banned, treated badly and threatened to stop posting from certain Linux, PC, Software and Font internet forums and mailing lists because I have a beyond religion or spiritual realm cause in the projects that I am posting about. When I read / listen about female infanticide / female foeticide, it shows that this is happening why -- there is the cultural factor operating. My content is different and thus that is the reason that I am being banned, treated badly and threatened to stop posting from certain Linux, PC, Software and Font internet forums and mailing lists. To be fair there are some useful responses on some internet forums / mailing lists and threads. Not all members are the same. On the other hand for example in Britain Linux User Groups (LUGs) -- Swlug (South Wales) has banned my posting to it's Linux group, Staffslug (Staffordshire) only yesterday threatened me with banning. Oxlug (Oxfordshire) does not allow me to post. Same with the other Sheflug (Sheffield). Some not all internet forums/mailing list organisers need some educating and need to educate others for example by having some by-laws and rules so that I am treated without these problems. How to produce an 'easy to edit' vertical time line or similar?
by Chris G 22 Jun '11

22 Jun '11

Can anyone suggest a way to produce an easy to edit/change vertical line with annotations on a web page? This can be anything from an editor with special capabilities to a wiki-like "do it over the web" application. It could even be something that is wholly off-line and generates an image file (though this is probably my least preferred method). I want to be able to have something which 'flows' down the page, preferably with an actual line of some sort that one can label. Then I want to be able to attach chunks of text description to symbols or markers on the line. Ideally I also want to be able to add further notes/numbers to the sections of the line between the symbols. Imagine something like a route description with a 'road' running down the screen, distances between places on the road and chunks of description applied to places/features on the road. Any ideas would be welcome. I guess it's a *bit* like a flow chart but there's no branching required and quick/easy editing facilities are more important than a large range of symbols and cleverness. -- Chris Green

There is not a Linux distro monopoly either. Thus based on these generics I don't see you have a valid argument. Updating to newer version of Debian
by ted.harding＠wlandres.net 22 Jun '11

22 Jun '11

Greetings all! I'd like to ask about something I've never found clear information on. Suppose one has an older stable version of Debian. For example, on one machine I have Debian 4 ("Etch"). on another Debian 5 ("Lenny"). But the current stable version is Debian 6 "Squeeze"). What are my chances of successfully upgrading from Lenny to Squeeze? And how to do it? And then what about upgrading from Etch to Squeeze? And what is likely to happen to packages (some external) installed on these obsolete Debians? (Especially where I have made my own modifications to software, most often configuration files and the like)? I should add that within each version I have been happily and successfully following the upgrades from Debian for the various Debian packages. All information and guidance welcome! With thanks, Ted. -------------------------------------------------------------------- E-Mail: (Ted Harding) <ted.harding(a)wlandres.net> Fax-to-email: +44 (0)870 094 0861 Date: 21-Jun-11 Time: 18:54:28 ------------------------------ XFMail ------------------------------

I would be grateful for answers to this survey, please number your answers for relating them to the questions below. This ( Linux User and Dev. Magazine #101 Build Your Own Distro http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/magazine-issues/linux-user-developer-issue-101-i… ) has choices for building your own distro. For the ones that interested me it says: susestudio.com is easy, polished, good documentation and web-based though it's Suse only instalinux.com has choice and is web-based though not polished interface uck.sourceforge.net is easy though Ubuntu only, not customisable look/feel and start from scratch approach to changes geekconnection.org/remastersys is very flexible and copies environment though Debian/Ubuntu only, not in Ubuntu yet and needs separate installation linuxfromscratch.org is flexible though requires manual steps revisor.fedoraunity.org is easy and offers possibilities though Fedora only 1. What tool is best for a non-techie to build linux distro? 2. Could the other distros logos / firmware gui be changed on them? 3. From susestudio, remastersys and revisor which is best for non-techie? 4. From susestudio, remastersys and revisor which is best for the distro customisation/flexibility (similar to question 2)? 5. From susestudio, remastersys and revisor which is the quickest to produce the distro for the non-techie? 6. From susestudio, remastersys and revisor which is best for consultant/expert to produce distro? 7. From susestudio, remastersys and revisor which is easiest for non-techie to upgrade over time? 8. From susestudio, remastersys and revisor which offer to the non-techie easiest live and installable distro? 9. If a consultant/expert was to use susestudio, remastersys or revisor, how much time would be spent to remove all fonts and put 2 fonts perhaps bitmap one font also, the distro logo and a live, installable, bootable media and downloadable distro? 10. If a non-techie was to use susestudio, remastersys or revisor, how much time would be spent to remove all fonts and put 2 fonts, the distro logo and a live, installable, bootable media and downloadable distro? 11. From susestudio, remastersys and revisor which offers the most quality community help? 12. Do any offer paid options where their team creates the distro for you for a fixed fee? Regards Meeku

auto restart an application
by Peter Alcibiades 19 Jun '11

19 Jun '11

Hi all, I am setting up another sort of kiosk now, and using pessulus to lock everything down, however there is an application not covered by pessulus, so it can be closed by the user. There are only two apps going to be available, this one and ephiphany. Ephiphany can be locked to fullscreen by Pessulus. I've found Pessulus excellent for what it does, by the way - very simple and pretty foolproof. How do I set it so that the other either cannot be closed, or alternatively, if it is closed it immediately restarts? I seem to remember a command option that does that but can't seem to find it or recall what it is. Something to do with respawn? I will be using devils pie to make it open in a different desktop and with the right geometry, but what I need is something to keep it open all the time. Peter

That's a good start then! Yes, I need to tidy up the code a bit but I was just playing at 1am so I will forgive myself for laziness when I really should have been in bed :-) > However, > >> #menu, #content { >> display:table-cell; >> } > > may give you problems with IE7 (which doesn't support it) and IE8 > (which does, but requires a proper !DOCTYPE). Yes, I was aware of this, but I'm hoping that since the structure in the HTML isn't too far removed from more typical attempts at table layout in CSS, I should be able to have an alternative stylesheet to fall back to for IE. My latest experimental version is here: http://www.more-solutions.co.uk/alug.html - I'd appreciate comments about the approach I'm taking (aside from the issue of IE6/7 for now). Basically it's for what will become a web application so controlling the layout makes sense, and the right hand "content" pane will likely be loaded using AJAX and it makes sense that it should scroll independently from the (tree) menu on the left which could get quite long if all nodes are opened. I'm a long way from being a CSS expert and I'd really like to try and learn how to do this "correctly" as far as I can. -- Mark Rogers // More Solutions Ltd (Peterborough Office) // 0844 251 1450 Registered in England (0456 0902) @ 13 Clarke Rd, Milton Keynes, MK1 1LG

Excel/Open Office to SQLite
by Chris Walker 15 Jun '11

15 Jun '11

I have a spreadsheet which is currently in OpenOffice ods format but obviously can easily be saved in another format should I need to. The spreadsheet holds roughly 6200 rows with 8 columns. I'd like to import 6 of those columns into an SQLite database and more to the point, do it automatically/programmatically rather than by hand. There is another difficulty (it's difficult for me, it might not be for you!) is that I want the tables to be created from the names in column 3. Some of those columns are numerical and SQLite doesn't appear to like that. The columns look like this :- Name1 Number Name2 Y/N Where Notes Unwanted1 & Unwanted2 For Name2, the rows repeat so there might be half a dozen of the same names, like 1648, 8Sail, Abbeydale against the rows in Name1. Is there somehow I can run a program, Perl, Python or whatever to extract the data and automatically squirt it into a database? I've searched online for something to help and did grab a Python script but it doesn't work for me and as my Python skills, like all my other programming skills amount to zero, I'm stuck, hence the question here. I'd appreciate any help or pointers you could give. -- __ __| |_ __ __ .----------------------------------------------. / _/ _` \ V V / | mailto:cdw_alug@the-walker-household.co.uk | \__\__,_|\_/\_/ |______________________________________________|

PDF manipulation, how to print a misconfigured booklet with 'two pages per page'?
by Chris G 13 Jun '11

I have a PDF document downloaded where the (landscape) pages are actually delivered as two pages per 'page'. Thus if you print it in the normal way you get two landscape pages across each sheet of paper. Mineral-free ultrapure water has a resistivity of 18.2 megaohm . cm. I'd call that "pretty damn non-conductive", personally. Of course, eighteen megaohm water is capable of leaching sodium ions out of glass, so... DC.

CSS question about using float
by Chris G 11 Jun '11

11 Jun '11

I have a little CSS conundrum. I want to have a heading (H1 or H2) followed by some small and different coloured text on the same line. I can't do much manipulation of the headings because they are generated by a Wiki, but I can apply CSS to them as well if necessary. So, I have got as far as something like:- <html><div class="textright">&nbsp Text on right</div></html> <html><h1>Heading 1</h1><html> with CSS:- .textright { margin-top: 1em; margin-bottom: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; float: right; } This works to an extent, the 'Text on right' does appear on the same line as the H1 heading as I want. However it's right across on the RHS and I really want it nestled up against the H1 text. Is there any reasonably easy way to get what I want? I'd really prefer not to have to make the heading 'float: left;' as this causes all sort of other fun and games, mainly because there's no easy way to 'clear: both;' afterwards. What I want is a box that occupies the whole width of the page the the right of the heading and then place the 'Text on right' within that box aligned to the left, but how do I get a box to place itself like that? -- Chris Green
