Another thing...

The copy of XP home which was on the Asus laptop when I bought it remains, surrounded by Squeeze and all its works. Squeeze and all its works work better, andbut... The XP volume was not installed properly, and some things do not work - for example, some software installations will not proceed beyond a certain - or rather, an uncertain - point. In any case, even for Billyware, XP runs at a snail's pace. It takes several minutes to unmount a USB memory stick. "Oh, reinstall it!" is the usual Billyware user's remedy. As Penguinistas will well know, this will result in XP marking all the territory round it like an incontinent dog - so - here is the question: I have a (legal) XP Pro CD, SP 3, and WGA Crack. What is the concensus of the cognoiscenti - should I install a severely truncated XP to USB memory, or run a similarly curtailed XP in Virtual Box? I tend towards the former solution as the XP can then run any of my machines (any which will boot from USB, that is...), and running a virtual XP will surely take up nearly as much HDD space as keeping it in its own partition? And, can I install it on a memory stick on the Acer without XP scribbling all over Squeeze? Oh, I want XP (well, anything which will run Paintsho Pro, Photoshop and Irfanview) for some programs which IMO Linux-based programs can't match. Please don't suggest The Gimp... I *do* use The Gimp, but only when I CBA to reboot into that very sub-standard XP installation. -- Tony Anson www.girolle.co.uk/

You may remember me looking for a straightforward 'grid' editor for sqlite - found one!

Well after hunting around for absolutely ages I think I have finally found what I needed for editing the data in sqlite tables, in place, in a grid. The program is tksqlite, it takes a while to dig down to find the current version, it doesn't live in any of the normal places and, at first glance at http://reddog.s35.xrea.com/wiki/TkSQLite.html it looks as if there's nothing newer than 2006 but on digging further I found:- http://sourceforge.net/projects/kbskit/files ... and there's recent builds there for 32-bit and 64-bit Linux. (OK, sourceforge *is* one of the usual places, but it's not at all obvious that tksqlite is there). It does almost exactly what I want and is also a very neat sqlite3 database administration tool, much less clunky IMHO that either sqlitebrowser or sqliteman. I just wish I could find some more complete documentation and/or a support list of some sort. -- Chris Green

I want to make a bootable USB memory stick with the Eee's operating system so I can run down my use of Xan-Dross. I've changed the root password so I can now tell it to do all those things it has steadfastly refused to do until now. What do people recommend? Ideally, a mirror of the HDD would be best. Now to discover how to devastate the unwanted pogroms... The next question is, what distro to put on the Eee instead of Xan-Dross, bearing in mind I use Debian as my main OS -- Tony Anson www.girolle.co.uk/

Back around version 3.x and before of Firefox there was a V symbol (i.e. a down pointer) next to the < (Back) button that would provide links back to the last few pages viewed before the current one in the same TAB. I used to find this very useful if one wanted to go back to a page before, for example, filling in a form. Using the Back button produces all those warnings about having to resend information. This has disappeared in current versions of Fifefox, has it gone for ever? -- Chris Green

Mint Issues

Hi All I've come back to the Linux fold, mostly because I'm developing in Java again. At the recommendation of a friend of mine I've installed Mint Linux 12 (Gnome) and I really like it. However, at what seems like random intervals I am unable to click anything. So I can't change between applications, I can't scroll scroll bars, I can't pull down, menus, etc. I can move the mouse and I can turn caps lock on and off. I'm running on a 2007 Think Pad T60. RAID Problems

Hi Gnu Grub Gurus! I've just spent an unpleasant evening getting my server to boot again. Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS, fully patched and up-to-date. Running Raid 1 with 2 active disks. Historically, got a error reported on 1 of the disks, so brought some bigger ones. Marked one of the old disks as "Failed" and added one of the new ones. Waited for it to synch. Marked the other old disk as "Failed", added the other new one. Waited for it to synch. That left me with 4 disks in the raid array, 2 new ones active, the old two marked as failed, but still connected. Was meaning to reboot this when I had time to fix any problems that may occur on rebooting. Tonight, I forgot that and rebooted the machine after something crashed. Then the machine wouldn't boot. Got all the bios screens, disks recognised etc, then I got an error along the lines of udevd-work mdadm --incremental /dev/sdd1 unexpected exit with status 0x000b Managed to boot from a live cd. Hacked around a bit, discovered I hadn't marked the new disks as bootable, and the partition type was wrong - Raid, as opposed to Raid-autodetect. Changed that disconnected the old disks, rebooted, and after the bios screens, where I would hope to see the grub boot menu, I just got a flashing cursor. This is the problem I want to solve - how to get it to boot with just the new disks in it. I shut it down again, reattached the old disks. Rebooted. It now has 4 disks, 2 new ones active, 2 old ones as spares (not synched). Could my problem be that Grub is not installed on the new disks. If that's the case, how can I check. How can I fix it if this is the problem. NB I'm using grub legacy (V0.97) If that's not my problem, what is my problem and how do I fix it? Is there a utility to spot missing/out of sequence files?

I suspect I'm going to have to write a utility to do this for me but there *might* be something to do it for me. I want to spot files missing from a sequence, e.g. if I see:- dscf1253.jpg dscf1254.jpg dscf1256.jpg dscf1257.jpg dscf1258.jpg dscf1259.jpg I want to be told that dscf1255.jpg is missing. -- Chris Green

How to execute something from a web page (i.e. hung on a button) without affecting the web page?

I want to have a button on a web page that executes some code (currently a bash script) but which isn't 'real' CGI in that it doesn't send anything back to the web server. I want nothing at all to happen to the web page when the button is clcked. Is there some sort of CGI 'output' which does nothing at all? -- Chris Green
