MP3 players+Ubuntu

Plugging in a generic MP3 player, I see that 8.04 no longer treats it as a USB drive and says it can't play what's on there without searching for codecs etc. Given that it's all in MP3 format this must be nonsense. It was more helpful when it viewed it as a USB drive so is there a way of changing this? Thanks. Cheap HP server OS free

Following on from a recent(ish) discussion about these. Ebuyer now have the cheap HP Dual Core Opteron servers back in stock, now at £97.86 +VAT but including a 3 year next business day warranty package. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146548 Ram is a bit lacking at 512MB but it is cheap to add more They are linux certified by HP for some flavours of Suse and Redhat so linux friendliness shouldn't be an issue and although the built in Graphics is a bit wanting they do have a full length PCI-E x16 slot to add something better so you could convert them into a reasonable desktop. The only negative thing I have to say is that the particular chip they use is (as Adam Bower has pointed out previously) known to be a bit of a watt muncher so expect a reasonable tag on your electricity bill if you use them as a home server powered 24/7. Probably an idle of something in the region of 200Watts or maybe slightly less.

I upgraded to Hardy Heron a few days ago and have two puzzles. One is that twice now I've had Network Manager error messages when I shut down, though I've changed none of the settings Bev. I was getting this on one of my machines after upgrade. The simple solution is to edit /etc/init.d/halt and /etc/init.d/reboot to remove the -i option i.e. in /etc/init.d/halt change: halt -d -f -i $poweroff $hddown to # halt -d -f -i $poweroff $hddown halt -d -f $poweroff $hddown and in /etc/init.d/reboot reboot -d -f -i to # reboot -d -f -i reboot -d -f (old lines left and commented out so that I know what I've done.) The man page states that "-i iterates configured network interfaces and brings them down before shutting down. On Linux, this is unnecessary as the kernel will do this anyway." It worked for me anyway. David Davies

Enemy Territory Quake Wars game night success

Hi, etqw last night was a pretty good success, 4 of us played hopefully we are going to do it again very soon. If you are interested then post here or find either quinophex, DrJeep or DralaFi on irc and we'll try to thrash out a time/date although we will probably have ad-hoc games during the week so asking on irc if we are playing might also be sensible. Just from a personal perspective given I'd not played quake wars until last night if we do get some more people interested who have not played before, perhaps we shouldn't go on a ranked server first and find a quiet server with some bots so it is a bit slower paced? I found the ranked game was far to frantic given I wasn't really sure what I was doing but as soon as we went up against some bots and had a bit more breathing space it became lots easier as I managed to work out how to actually complete missions. Just a reminder that tomorrow (tuesday) is Quake Wars game night. First game at 8PM, meet on #alug (IRC) at 7:30. Second game at 10PM, meet on IRC at 9:30. Alternatively friend drjeep and/or dralafi within the game before 6PM and use the follow feature to find us.

I've just found that the preferences menu has the option to make the Courier font bold and it's much better. The error messages go by pretty fast (it's the last thing I see before it shuts down completely) but it starts off by announcing that it's starting various processes. If I can write down what it says I'll post it. Ipswich Meet Location on the 21st

I haven't seen an announce yet for the Ipswich meet and don't know if I have missed some conversation about the potential new venue. Is it still at the Milestone as per the Alug wiki front page or are we going with Sam Wise's suggestion to the main list of giving the Punch and Judy a go ?
