upgrading from 6.06 LTS to 8.04 LTS

I've done what the Ubuntu website says and gone to system > admin > update manager and installed the last batch of updates but it doesn't mention anything about the new version when I click on 'upgrade' again. Am I a) being a bit impatient or b) is there another (simple!) way round this? Oh yes, and is there anything important I need to do, that I have forgotten, before upgrading? Thanks. Anyone using Firefox 3.0 yet?

Has anyone here moved from Firefox 2.0.x to Firefox 3.0 yet? If so are there any big (or small) issues? My main problem is that my favourite add-on (Mozex) isn't available for Firefox 3.0 and looks like it may never be. There is an alternative (ItsAllText) but it's not so flexible and doesn't allow one Mozex facility that I do use (the ability to launch a local program from an arbitrary URL). One simple question occurs to me, can Firefox 3.0 be configured to call a text mode program (e.g. mutt in my case) on mailto: links? -- Chris Green

Gnome - Icons and file extensions

Hi, sorry about this folks but having a bit of a head scratching time with Gnome. A word processor and spreadsheet package I've used for years is softmaker office. It's a remnant from my Windows days and people have tried to convert me over to Abiword and Gnumeric but they keep failing, due to file compatibility issues mainly. However with this latest headache they might just win. Softmaker Office files and templates have *.tmd, *.tmv, *.pmv and *.pmd extensions. I always found this easy under KDE Kontrol Centre but as a fairly recent Gnome convert I was trying to change two things, and I'm struggling; 1. Set the correct application to open files with the extensions above. This I have now done. I was searching through the Gnome menus, synaptic and Googling for ages and in the end it was as simple as right clicking the file in nautilus and selecting properties, open with, add -> /home/martin/bin/office/textmaker etc. This sets the correct application for all files ending in *.tmd, etc 2. Change the icon for all files ending in *.tmd etc. This I cannot do. I can do it for individual files by right clicking in nautilus and selecting properties, clicking on the icon and browsing for different one, but it only does it for that one file say something called report.tmd, not all files ending in *.tmd. Is this correct behaviour or a bug? I know Gnome tries to be more transparent than KDEs change everything ideals, but I thought this might be a relatively easy thing to do for a window manager. I must be missing something easy like my booboo in item 1, but what? It's driving me mad. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks & regards, Martin

using ubuntu 7.10 fax modem chipset HSFi CX11252-41 I bought this modem from ebuyer a few months ago as someone had found drivers for it on opensuse ver 9... so i thought there was a good chance it would work in ubuntu. Tried all three CAN'T BE FAR OUT!.... Also tried gFax and that didn't work either or should i use hylafax? Be grateful if someone could put me right. thanks james

Fedora 9 startup scripts

Dear All, Before I upgraded from Fedora 8 to 9, the script /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit used to run hwclock --rctosys at boot time. Now it doesn't any more - but presumably something else does. And I'd like to fiddle with the options that "something else" passes to hwclock. So does anyone have any idea what "something else" is, please? -- Thanks, Dan Hatton
