Fonts (well typefaces actually) and printers in Linux

My upgrade to Slackware 10 went fairly smoothly last night and I seem to have most of the system back to normal - with the intended bonus that I now have a set of compatible and reasonably up to date libraries to build against. The next task in my migration of an Access 97 application to Linux is to make more fonts available for printing from a couple of KDE applications. I can't at the moment get my mind round where the fonts on the system come from as each application I run seems to have a different view of what's available. However the particular requirement at the moment is to get a decent looking sans-serif font for knoda to print with. Many applications (and most of KDE) seem to have the Bitstream Vera font family available as screen and print fonts. However knoda doesn't show these as available, all it shows is an odd collection (from memory):- Courier Utopia Cursor Monospace a.n.other (Dingbats?) In reality when I print anything in size 10 from knoda it looks like Courier to me. I installed knoda using a Slackware package (i.e. it was pre-compiled in a .tgz file), could this be the problem? I.e. whoever built knoda and packaged it had a different set of fonts which don't match what I have? If so it's not a problem to build it myself. As a more generic question it would be useful to know how applications decide what printer fonts are available. All the FAQs and HOWTOs I've looked at don't seem to address the issue of printer fonts at all, they seem to assume that once you can see the font on screen everything is done. -- Chris Green (chris(a)areti.co.uk) "Never ascribe to malice, that which can be explained by incompetence."

xdm error

OK, now I have the xorg.conf file on the run I'm left with the xdm error. There is an error in the xdm.log file:- xdm error (pid 7439): XDMCP socket creation failed, errno 97 A Google search hasn't brought up much but the one thing that's possible is that xdm is expecting IPV6 and I don't have IPV6, this seems odd as I've installed a well debugged distribution. X problems after upgrade

I have just upgraded my Slackware system from 9.1 to 10. It's all gone pretty smoothly really (I'm here for starters, I still have a network, comms., etc.!). However X, or at least the display side of it seems to have gone a bit wonky and I cant find any useful configuration files, FAQs or HOWTOs at the moment. The issue probably has quite a lot to do with the move from Xfree to Xorg. X is actually up and running and my xfce desktop is working locally (I'm using it now). What I'm missing is:- I can't find any documentation for the xorg.conf file. I just copied my old xf86config file over the top of it and it works but I don't know how to tune it or change it. Apart from anything else the refresh rate is horrible at the moment! xdm isn't working. The win2k system can 'see' the Slackware box and the Slackware box can see the Win2k box but xdm has stopped working. I can't find *any* video/screen setup documentation, where is it? Greetings, This is my first visit to the list for a few years. I got bogged down with wife and children duties. Brief info : Im John Freeman, 31, from Bury St Edmunds, working in Cambridge as a software engineer. Been using Linux full time for 7 years now (both admin and development). I use Gentoo as my distro of choice. Second reason for post: I have an HP Netserver LH4R for sale. 4 * PIII Xeon (500mhz) 2.5 Gig of Ram RAID 4 * 9.1 GB Hot swap SCSI disks I only want £100 for this baby, my wife is making me sell it as she needs the space back :( I want £100 so I can buy an accoustic guitar, will swap for a decent accoustic guitar. SUSE NETWORKING NIGHTMARE!

Ok I'm getting all confused now! Just asked around the place and there is no WINS server on our network. Should there be? I think I need to lie down. I did as recomended and set up my smb.conf with the share details. I think I stopped and then restarted smb but I'm not sure. SUSE 9.1 SAMBA NETWORK ERROR

Annoying Newbie, back again. After looking around the smb.conf in SUSE 9.1 I finally descovered the problem behind the error "Network unreachable" when trying to browse the LAN in konquorer. After the workgroup name is changed from "TUX-NET" to the one that the rest of the LAN uses "MSHOME" (in YAST samba server setup) the problem occurs. When the name is changed back to "TUX-NET" browsing in konquorer is ok again. Although I have found this out I am still no closer than I was to sorting out my network. I think that I have been asking the wrong questions. What I am trying to achieve is this; I am running SUSE 9.1 on a peer to peer network along with seven WINXP machines. I want to share one folder called "My network share" and its sub folders and files. Allow others on the network to see it and read/write to it. "My network share" is in /home. I still want to be able to browse the network with my Linux box and read/write to the WINXP shares. This should be as simple as setting things up in YAST2 but as I said above, every time I change the workgroup in YAST or smb.conf I loose my ability to browse the network. Please somebody put me out of my misery one way or another as I'm still the laughing stock of this WINXP crowd. Is this a samba problem or is it KDE or SUSE or just ME?! Where am I going wrong? What am I missing? Why is this not simple? Hope someone can help. Samba Printing

I'm currently working onsite at a client and I need to be able to connect my Linux laptop to their printer. Unfortunately it's a Windows share and the printer name contains spaces - which Samba absolutely refuses to connect to. I've Googled around on this but can't find a workaround. Changing the printer name is absolutely out of the question. Are there any experts here who have any tips to try in this situation? Matt

Running total from a database table - how?

I'm steadily progressing with my conversion of my Access accounting system to a Linux based system. I've moved from using mysql to postgresql which has made a few things easier by having VIEWs in the database. Rekall seems to have most of what I need on the forms and reports front except for one thing - I can't see how to implement a 'running total' column. The Access97 report tool has a specific 'running total' column type which does exactly what I need. Rekall doesn't have anything like this (that I can see).
