Now that I have almost completely migrated over to my new machine the old one is up for grabs. I can't remember exactly when I built it, I think it was some time early 2001, but at the time it was a pretty cutting edge machine. Details Super expensive coolermaster Aluminium case (cost over £100 back then) AMD 1 Ghz Athlon 640MB RAM 40GB Seagate Barracuda HDD (there were more but I've nicked them) Pioneer DVD (A04) DVD-R/RW * see note below DVD ROM drive Floppy (a new one) ATI Rage 128 card (again I've nicked the Nvidia card that was in it) 3Com NIC Creative live 256 gold (or something like that) sound card (more inputs and outputs than you'll ever need) It's an Abit kt7-raid board so the drive is running on a highpoint raid controller and each of the optical drives is on it's own channel on the VIA controller. 300W PSU Logitec Wireless Keyboard and Mouse combo Naturally this machine was built to run Linux and apart from a brief flirtation with Windows XP that is all it has ever run. Everything is detected and installed with ease on our favourite Operating System. It will come with SuSE 9.1 preinstalled (and an installation DVD-R) To be honest the CPU fan is sounding a bit stressed so that will be replaced before it is sold. Also the DVD Writer has had a tendancy to make DVD coasters recently. Not sure if it's the cheapo media I have been using or the drive on it's way. You should probably presume that the drive has had it, I am only leaving it in place on the chance that it is configuration or media. This has been a great machine, enjoying uptime only limited by SuSE's kernel update release cycle. I would love to see it go to another Linux user as that was what it was built for. £150.00 Also Dell P991 19" monitor (is exactly the same as a Sony model) Trinitron flat faced screen, happy up to 1600x1200 but I ran it at 1280x1024 A really nice monitor but it's big and HEAVY £50 Or the machine plus the monitor for £185 Also Yamaha 8x4x24 SCSI CDR/W (yes it is a bit slow, but I swear it has NEVER made a coaster under Linux) in an external SCSI case (Ultra D-Sub connector) Plus an Adaptec SCSI card (linux friendly) and all the leads to use the Yamaha either internally or in the external case. £20 Plextor Ultraplex 40x Max PX-40TSi SCSI CD-ROM I used this with the kit above, the plex internally and the Yamaha in the external case (although I do have another external case for the plex if needed) Probably a bit redundant now but at the time this drive was the fastest way to rip CD-Audio. £10 Or everything listed above for £200

Problems with NTP

I'm having trouble synchronising the time of my network clients using NTP. I have a server (helios.perrings) running NTP and listening on UDP 123 (confirmed usinf lsof -i). I also have configured the clients to request time from this server. However, the clients report that no time server can be found. From the documentation, it appears that the src port and dest port should both be 123, but when I do a tcpdump, I get the following results: 20:58:27.476153 IP 192.168.0.10.32851 > helios.perrings.ntp: NTPv4 client, strat 0, poll 4, prec -6 20:58:27.476927 IP helios.perrings.ntp > 192.168.0.10.32851: NTPv4 server, strat 0, poll 4, prec -18 The client's (192.168.0.10) return address is 32851, not 123 as expected. I've been trying to find where this alternative port is set, but going round in circles. Any ideas, suggestions, please? When issue man ntpd, the resulting page says that ntpd does not come with man pages - instead look at the documentation that came with it. The most common problem is some firewall between the workstation and server. Changing subscription email address

I want to change the email address to/from which I subscribe to the ALUG mailing list. However, the personal admin page only allows me to change my password. I could unsubscribe and resubscribe but I wondered if there were not a neater method? Ian Bell

Loki Games

Does anybody own a copy of Soldier of Fortune for Linux that they are bored with/wish to sell. I have checked with all the UK Loki resellers I can find and nobody has stock any longer. Unlike some of the earlier loki ports it is not possible (AFAIK) to simply use a combination of the linux demo binary and the Windows version maps with this game.

For future reference (and in case you ever need to access the installation RPMS and have lost internet access) this is how to do a loopback mount Create a mount point somewhere by creating an empty folder there. Personally with loopbacks I like to do it in my home directory, but it depends on what you are doing with it. For this example mkdir /home/wayne/mandrake mount -r -o loop whatever.iso /home/wayne/mandrake Now if you browse over to the mandrake folder you will see the contents of the iso If you require write access to the iso then simply omit the -r Don't forget to umount it when you are finished.
