Use the most recent version, as it's the most stable. It's worth a try and you should be able to get rpm's for it, if not there, on Mandrake Cooker. Introduction

Just a quick hello from someone who's just joined. Backgound: Married 49 year old male (no kids) currently living in Norwich. I've been working with computers (mostly commercial software development plus some system admin. and support) for nearly all of my working life. Most of that has been with IBM mainframes and PC Windows networks of various kinds. I currently work at the Stalham office of an outfit called Kewill (www.kewill.com). My wife thinks I've totally lost it because I come home and relax by doing what I've been doing at work all day! I've had a home computer since the days of the good ol' BCC Micro. I was lucky enough to work on a Unix based system (Sun) about 10 years ago and ended up as the sys. admin. (oh! happy days! :o) ). I've been a Unix fan ever since. Reason for joining: After many years of saying "This year I'm going to install an Intel version of Unix on my PC" I finally got round to putting Mandrake 7.0 on early last year. I immediately started to try and customise it to suit my hardware and ran into all sorts of problems. I'm now in the midst of trying to install my own flavour of Linux from the Linux From Scratch project <http://www.linuxfromscratch.org> and having moderate success. I hope to learn enough from this to have a bit more success tailoring Linux for my own use. It would be nice to link up with other Linux afficianados in the area and swap war stories, experiences etc. and perhaps be able to help others out where possible. XFree 4, Matrox G400 & graphics acceleration

I have a Matrox Millenium G400 in my machine which is running Debian 'Testing' which means XFree 4.1.0 I believe. I notice that in the kernel configuration there is an AGP support option which is not enabled. If I enable this a number of other options become selectable none of which match my mainboard's chipset AMD 760MP. Further down the DRI option if enabled (which it currently isn't) then a Matrox G200/G400/G450 option becomes available. Do I need any of this? That is to say would it make normal graphics use any faster? I don't play games or use any particularly graphics intensive software. Any advice *may* make me less confused - but then again ... Hello List, Anyone out there creating PDF files with Linux? If so, with what software? Basically I have a bunch of stuff to scan and convert into PDF and jpg files. Jpg is easy but I'm not so sure about PDF....
