OK, now this is possibly one of the strangest requests that you'll ever get... I want virii, basically so that I can test/play with this funky java ScannerDaemon thing that I want to plug in to our server (free virus scanner, yay!). So, all those "really fun" M$ viruses that we all get from time to time, please bounce a copy this way! (works mail server appears to be filtering the main culprits, damn!) so, brettp(a)users.sourceforge.net is the way to go (I use imap on it from work, given that it redirects to liunuxfreemail.com) Thanks guys (and gals), Brett - The totatally insane virus hunting mad fool - Parker

As I'm trying to rewrite my firewall script (last one on this system was autogenerated). I'm trying to find a suitable one to crib from. I am a standard dial-up user but with a fixed ip address (I use demon). Obviously I need to browse the net, check my pop3 mailbox etc. and the only services I need to listen on is port 21, IRC and Instant messaging (i.e AIM and MSN). I do no forwarding/masquerading, as I'm not on an internal network. If anyone would like to send me example scripts to this e-mail address, it would be greatly appreciated. Bit of fun: Your first Linux distro

Hi folks, Just for a bit of fun (since it's Friday) - what was your very first exposure to Linux and what was your first distribution that you ever installed (and can you remember the kernel version?!). For me, I was about to head off to university and became very interested in UNIX (and in particular, Linux) since it was beginning to make a bit of a splash in various computer magazines at that time. I got hold of a copy of Yggrdrasil Linux which boasted that it had 0.93 (or was it 0.98, I can't remember) of the Linux kernel. I had a relatively new 486DX-33 computer at the time with 8Mb RAM and attempting to run XFree86 on it was incredibly slow. I managed to persuade the folks that I needed more RAM, and eventually ended up with 16Mb which made all the difference which meant that I had a working X-Windows box that did keep swapping it's memory to HD and slowing the thing down to a crawl. Funny. Most people find that GNU/Linux means that they don't have to buy new computers as often and that there is a lot of free documentation and help available online. OK...the guy in despatch clicks a button in my ms access database (stop spitting) , which sends the out put in html format to the web directory. There is a link to this file from my intranet website so that anyone (and in particular my boss, who likes to keep a nice tight hold on credit matters) can scrutinise it with an eagle eye. If stuff is being omitted, I'll get my knuckles rapped. So it is just one page, I need to take the multiple pages access has generated and turn them back into one. This must be done before anyone accesses the page, but after the report has been run (daily). It seemed to me that when the page was accessed was a good trigger. If I can use the apache log file to trigger a script that does the appending, i would be delighted....but i now have half an hour left to mend this ugly oversight on my part ( I blame access) and don't know if I can understand this awk thing in that time. Mind you...or php...... (/me finds table and crawls under it with brown paper bag over head...) Now, how about if I try and use a file date changing as a trigger to run a file? So if the date on my html file changes (as the despatch guy sends a new one) it runs a script doing the appending...is *that* more simple? :-) Thanks all! Jen.

The Apsfilter list suggested taking out lpr and putting in LPrng to overcome `permission problems', Slackware current has a Slackware package of LPrng to try to improve matters (for the same reason I presume), but in my case there have been that many ill informed attempts to get it to work, that I am seriously considering taking everything out and making a clean install, trouble is I lack not only the GNU/Linux experience but computing experience in general, (see previous post). All I wanted was a controllable system which I could use to produce copy for publication, save my research notes and connect to the Internet, and print out papers for Editors. then I found GNU/Linux, and now I'm addicted, I've even spent a huge chunk of last years pocket money on new computers, and probably more on a huge GNU/Linux library which I have yet to understand. -- John Seago Change is not synonymous with `progress'. My Linux Notebook shows my first install was mandrake 8 on the 5th of the 7th last year, (this after two years of having Windows as an electric typewriter and nothing more; second-hand computer cheaper than new word processor). Moved up to 8.1 which showed every sign of becoming a Linux version of Windows by 8.2 so moved on to Slackware 8, which looks as if, if I live long enough I might just be able to catch up enough to be able to control it by the time I'm 70 or so. My insoluable problem, printing, it won't! But I'll have to get Chris my son-in-law to outline the problem. (I'm expecting his post to follow). John Seago

OT Small html question

Sorry to go off topic but I wondered if some one of you web designers out there could answer me a small question. How can I get the alt property within an <img src=...> to be pre formatted or at least can I get line breaks in it? i.e. <img src="mypicture.jpg" alt="some preformatted text with line breaks in it"> -- Cheers, BJ
