Reporters probably thought they saw something on an FTP site other than Rawhide, but we assure you, it was Rawhide. Reports cite that this supposed ROSWELL beta included 4 CDs of software, with such things as a 2.4.6 Linux kernel, XFree86 4.1.0, KDE 2.2pre, GNOME 1.4, and journaling file system support, and included support for both x86 and ia64. Were any such Red Hat Linux beta release to exist, it would not be recommended for use on mission-critical hardware, and any casualties due to data loss, mutation, swamp gas, radiation, or strange glowing lights with such a release would be scoffed at. Any problems or bugs with such a release would most likely be the effect of passing weather balloons. These problems would be reported at: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/ However, there is no evidence to suggest the actual presence of a ROSWELL beta release. Those who claim otherwise would best not flaunt their naivete by telling anyone that they saw anything other than Rawhide. Andrew et al. Further to my last message, the extra options I mentioned appear to be those that work with a normal X server (normal, rather than nested). One interesting use for this is to open a session on another unix station that uses XDMCP to log in and where you wouldn't want the session and window managers from that other machine interfering with your local machine. Just say: Xnest :1 -query hostname Where 'hostname' is the host you want to log in to. The other options are documented in the man page 'Xserver'. Steve.

Xnest appears to have some options that are not in the man page. The first possible solution is the '-ac' option which disables access control. The other solution which I haven't tested would be: 1. Generate a magic cookie with xauth and store it in a file. 2. Start Xnest with the -auth option and specify that file. 3. Set XAUTHORITY to the that file (and export it) before starting clients. expect the unexpected! I do hate it when people say that, because .... But since I am not a total pedant and only have 9/10 for getting side tracked I am posting to ask if anyone knows why my expect script does not work. It apears to log on ok to my remote linux box, but fails to execute anything. I am planning to launch grip, xterm's and the like as I dont have enough monitors, keyboards, space for them or arms as long as my network cabels. Hello, Trying to run Xnest with : Xnest :1 which runs fine, however, trying to run an xterm on it doesnt work: xterm -display :1 Xlib: connection to ":1.0" refused by server Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server xterm Xt error: Can't open display: :1 And I cant run xhost, either, so does anyone know how I can automatically start an xterm on Xnest, or some other solution please?
