I have since installed every XSane extra there was via synaptic but it's still won't play ball. I'm very reluctant to give in though so how do I investigate what's up? And even more to the point, how do I fix it? It knows it's there I'm sure.
Can you be more specific about the brand and model? Does it show up when you run "lsusb"?

Is the scanner older than 2 years?
