http://www.tuxmobil.org/ helps me with laptops. Modems I've never had trouble with. Those glorified soundcards they misname "winmodems" have been trouble when I've met them.
The ALUG group seems pretty enthusiastic about the subject, its just a shame you don't have meetings where I can get to them (around Ipswich would be good).
