I was using -e to see what the problem was. Using -c took me back to the normal bash prompt with no message of any sort.
For multiple commands I'd guess separating them with semicolons or using a shell script are the alternatives.
I can do it with a script but I want to be able to use the more flexible command line approach.
I'll try your suggestion of using semicolons.
