Yes, we've come across that .local problem at work too. It won't get fixed until the next release of OS X. It doesn't even work in Jaguar for Goodness sake! You know, I'm beginning to see Steve Jobs as being next Bill Gates but in the visual effects industry. He is CEO of Pixar, which produces award-winning computer animated films as well as the Renderman rendering system used widely in loads of visual effects studios. He is also, of course, CEO of Apple which now owns the high-end Shake and Rayz compositing software. He's introducing huge discounts on the Mac OS X versions of these software against the Windows (of which the Shake development for Windows is being stopped) and Linux. Renderman is still the industry standard rendering software (the only competition was Entropy which was formed by ex-Pixar employees and has had a law-suit filed against it for potential breach of copyright of the Renderman software, IIRC - the result of which is they can't develop any new versions of Entropy).
And I thought the ISP industry was tough..

Martyn

heh, there are plenty of standards for linux window managers... choice

:) recent pet hates with OS X are a. not including/supporting X11 in
the
default install so having to install it by hand... and b. is the stupid automagic network configuration system that you can't turn off
which
refuses to resolve anything that may be called .local in the DNS as
they
hardcoded it in, which i know is causing problems for more than just

Plently of window managers is probably a good thing but at the end of the day, newbies are gonna get confused ;)
a) X11? Install XDarwin instead. b) Er.. no problems here?
anyhow any computer that ships with only one mouse button is trouble
if you
ask me... ;)
Heh, well get another usb mouse and plug it in. ;)
