You can buy Dell servers with Dead Rat pre-installed, so I guess they're linux compatable!
A word of warning! Some disreputable suppliers have been known to ship "Red Hat Linux compatible" servers which often have distribution-specific closed-source proprietary binary drivers for some of the hardware (which is otherwise unsupported), which means as soon as you try and upgrade to another distribution you find you can't get all your devices to work.
Make sure whatever you buy is certified *linux* compatible (and not a specific distro) and if it is not, make absolutely sure you tell the vendor you want it in order to run *linux* on. You then have some redress under the Sale of Goods Act (fit for purpose, knowingly sold for specific purpose).
If you can give me more specific details (gfx card, media other than hard disks eg cd/dvd/floppy/zip, nic, type of hd eg scsi or ide), then I'm sure I can get you a competitive quote. Mail me off-list and I'll point you to my recommended vendor ;-)
Andrew.
