VLC went on fine. But If I run get_iplayer (latest version 2.91) it doesn't convert the files to mp3 as my own does. I can't find ffmpeg anywhere so after googling, I found a site that told me to add a repo. Tried doing that but get an error about aptsources which can't find a distribution template for LinuxMint/rebecca.
In the absence of any good advice here I would recommend the get_iplayer mailing list; they're a helpful bunch and are more likely to know the innards of GiP than ALUGers.
That was the only problem I did manage to fix. I was unable to add any ppa repositories for some reason so I wiped the discs, removed the LVM as that seemed to be preventing me from reinstalling, and installed from a DVD whereas my eldest son had done a net install. I can't for the life of me see why that would stop things working but anyway, having reinstalled it, I could then add a ppa and do a proper install of get_iplayer. I never did manage to stop the thing locking up with a white screen whenever certain operations were performed like web browsing though.
My youngest has now left for home and taken the box with him. So I no longer have the thing to play with.
One thing I did notice is that wifi would stop working after a time. If I removed the USB adapter I could feel that it was very warm. Allowing it to cool down would restore its functionality until a repeat performance a few minutes later. As my youngest son prefers the box to use wifi rather than to wire it in, I don't see that the box has much of a future with him so I think he'll go back to using the laptop I gave him a few months ago. The only advantage the shuttle has over the laptop is that of noise. It's much quieter.
