vi and emacs are not viable tools for *word* processing, no... but... replace word processing with text processing, write your documents in TeX and have a whole world of new fun! Also, for the weak, there's lyx, which will cheerfully spit out TeX files while looking a little like a wordprocessing app.
Text Editors are the way forward... why do you think everythings going XML based, surely it can't all just be hype... no... that wouldn't cause such a diverse bunch of people to start playing with a mark up language... surely. There must be more to it than that... oh yeah, content and presentation seperation <g>.
