[ALUG] Accented characters

What is the easiest way to get accented characters, specifically French, in apps running under KDE? In Open Office I can access them from Insert->Special Character but it is a bit long-winded. No idea how to get them in things like Kmail. Is there an equivalent of ALT+NumericKeypad codes, for example? Thanks Syd
