I'm not sure if this is off topic (this may be partly because I don't know why I have this problem) but the difficulty is this. (If it is off topic, despite Android being related to Ubuntu, be gentle about pointing this out.)
I can get my android (4.2.2) phone to connect to my pc now via usb cable **but** I can't see the dcim folder or the download folder as I used to with my old phone. Indeed, I can’t see any of the usual folders you wish to see to transfer any files from a phone to a computer, even though I have installed a couple of mtp programs. I have googled for info on this and I know it's not an uncommon problem but I've yet to find out how to fix it. Do I need an app (in which case this post is way off topic) do I need to update some bit of software or what? I've no idea. Help.
Hi,
not sure why you're having problems, but I think android has tried to get itself more secure by denying access to this that and the other, so it may be it doesn't share the phone's storage by default.
My first thought would be to connect the phone, then start the "disk" utility (I forget exactly what it's called), as this shows you exactly what's mounted and where. I'm hoping you'll see the phone and the phone's memory/SD card. I suspect that the phone is not mounted but the SD card is. If that's the case, you could try to mount the phone.
If this isn't the case, the simplest thing to do is use a file manager app on your phone. Copy the files from DCIM to a different folder that you can see from your PC. Then copy them onto the computer. I use ES FIle Explorer for this sort of thing on my phone.
However, if you have a wireless network that your phone connects to, and a SAMBA shared folder (Like a windows share), then ES File Exp can write to it directly via its network tab. I think it can also do FTP. I haven't explored this. I use this approach, but I have already got a wireless network and a SAMBA share configured. It's overkill if you just want to transfer photos.
Also, what might be happening is your phone might be trying to connect to your PC with a particular piece of windows software specific to your phone, rather than just mounting as a normal USB device. It may be worth googling something like "How to connect a MANUFACTURER MODEL phone with Linux Ubuntu" with the appropriate substitutions.
Good luck!
