Or, as I've just discovered, you can go to Other Applications and get it to 'Forget Association' with Image Viewer or Gimp. (No 'Set as Default' option.) Solved, anyway.

Ok, fired up the same config.
I'm assuming that you're using Nautilus as the file manager.
Try this:
Right click on a doc or docx file. Select "Properties" Select "Open With" tab Either select writer (if it's a recommended app) and click the "Set as default" button, or click "Other Applications", select Writer and click "Set as default".
