'by putting in a crappy old IDE disk that contained /boot and the swap partition, and used the raid for everything else. It's been running 3 weeks without problems (well no ones asked me to mend it!)' --------------- you may find that using a crappy old IDE may slow the system down considerably if it starts paging a lot. You might find it interesting to make a swap partition on your big disk and then try doing something that swaps a lot to test which swap is faster - worth an afternoons playing as it can make a hell of a difference!
