Since you're using SuSE you should be able to get it by using YOU (Yast Online Update) and get the Multimedia Option Packs. You'll get Audacity plus loads of other goodies, as well as the ability to play MP3 files. I didn't get it from the official site so can't answer why it may not be working.
Also make sure you quit Amarok if you're using it as for some reason it hogs the sound card and Audacity will complain that it can't get direct access to the sound card.
