Gnus+XEmacs is probably as good as newsreading (and email) gets, I think, but that assumes you like Emacs. I've strayed, but come back to it again now that my email has hit preposterous. The reason I don't use slrn is its scoring isn't as good ;-)
Emacs is far too steep a learning curve for the moment, when I have more time.... And 'scuse me for being thick but what do you mean by scoring?
You obviously aren't addicted to games :)
One thing I'm not is a game head, 10 mins of Lemmings or a game of Freecell is about as far as it goes.
