Read the hardware HOWTO and www.alsa-project.org to find out if your sound card is well-supported. Depending on whether you're using the standard kernel drivers or ALSA, the setup will vary a bit. Unless something changed, the ALSA package in debian is a little out of date. Debian's own installation howto isn't bad, but remember there are lots of people around UEA to lend a hand if you hit problems. Back everything up first, though.
