CntlF1 or CntlF2 do not get me into root, this must be something I am getting wrong on the install/configuration, any suggestions please?

Cntl Alt F1 will get you to a console when you are in X, not just cntlF1. I assume KDM/GDM/XDM load OK? If so then have you tried getting into the console from there and apt-get update / dist-upgrading from there? It *might* help....
