I think the reason they were set to hold was because of a wave of spammers using base64 to send things like YnV5IHlvdXIgZHJ1Z3MgaGVyZSBodHRwOi8vZm9vCg== which should be blocked but are fiddly to catch with Mailman's filters.
I'll spare you my usual rant about googleware doing the wrong thing and being harder to fix than it needs to be!
