Can anybody recommend a good all rounder 54Mbs PCMCIA and/or PCI desktop card that works with Linux like a comfortable slipper and supports a good range on it? I've had enough of Netgear cr*p to last me a lifetime.

What's wrong with the Netgear stuff? I've used a WG511T 108Mb for a couple of years with Linux with no problems at all.
The Intel Centrino chipsets work well, and the latest driver from Sourceforge for the 2200 series now support monityor mode, so Kismet works with them.
