You may find it useful to save a copy of the outputs of dmesg and lsmod before you install the new kernel- useful in choosing modules, etc. during the actual install, and useful for troubleshooting afterwards. Go ahead- it's not that scary! (hell, *I* managed it!) You can always switch back if things go awry!
