I'm asking on behalf of a client and haven't actually looked at his setup, I must confess - he asked me if I knew anyone who knew of a usb-ethernet that would work on his machine. I'll have a prod in the machine (not a laptop) next time I'm over and answer you properly. It does seem obvious now you point it out :-))

Wired or wireless?
I have succesfully used a wireless D-Link USB on Ubuntu 7.10. The D-Link model number is DWL-G122. /proc/bus/usb/devices reports it as an Ralink 802.11 b/g device (see below).
The only problem I had was that the device initially refused to associate with my AP. I had to force association to the AP MAC address with iwconfig. Thereafter it worked OK though.
