Yes they will do the job but I would try using XML and XSL for the job try getting your hands dirty and write your layout in XSL and your content in XML and you wont look back unless of cause you like repetative HTML coding.
I have a little peace of XSL code which puts neat borders around block of data to be presented. (Graphics from a passable OS X theme)

Your mail client generates neither In-Reply-To or References, so I can't ever see what you were talking about after I read your first message unless I search the spool and that's more effort, so less likely to occur.
