I believe squirrelmail has been deprecated because it hasn't been updated in years. I have used webmail with both squirrelmail and roundcube (and dislike both because I think webmail is an abomination) and have never installed either on my own mailservers, but roundcube seems popular.

All I /can/ recommend is that you stay away from horde (which I have tried to install a long time ago, against my better judgement)) - a god awful overcomplicated pile of crap (IMHO).
