I guess that much of the content of these emails is soo far above my head I assumed the meets would be the same.
Unless something has changed, meets are more of a mix than the email lists. People talk socially on IRC and at meetings, but email when they need to give more details or if they get stuck.
IRC tends much further towards the social than the technical, still... We're just having a chat about the National Trust at the moment... ;)
(Oh, and the correct colour scheme for terminals. I'm much in favour of the white on black route...)
We also do the odd quick "how can we speed up $thing" and play guess the right config lines game.
E.g. it usually a very bad idea to run apache2's mod_php with MaxRequestsPerChild set to 0, as then any PHP leaks stay leaked, and over time it all grinds to a halt... but then, really, as mod_php only works with the prefork mpm, I tend to optomise to a FastCGI based php with the worker mpm instead - also means that people can't kill the webserver from php (which is handy!).

Anyways, I didn't really get what the stuff about SFD was, but as I live near Syleham that location would get my vote for a meeting.
Sorry for the abbreviation. I'm in a rush this quarter. Mark Rogers is right: SoftwareFreedomDay.org Events more for newbies, mainly, so far.
I can't remember the last time we actually did one of those, was it the one at UEA? That would have been "a while ago"!
Cheers,
