I think you might be right, or at least while it's working the risk of forcing a power-on fsck might outweigh the benefits.
The disk (SD card) was created from a disk image of a working system and looking at the output from dumpe2fs the details predate the creation of this card. It''s almost like some of the settings there have become read-only (is that even possible?).
