so do u know when the next meeting is and are they free etc? i went to the alug meeting site but they out of date etc it sys join the mail list to know the times etc? so are you Near the Uea then?
Where abouts are you if u dont mind me asking,>?
They are free, unless the venue costs money to hire. I've never paid anything. I forgot that the venue for the next meeting burnt down, so I think we're still yet to organise a replacement venue! I used to live on Dereham rd, now I live in spixworth.
so why is the norton appz not needed in Linux and can i get cd burning software free for linux like download etc or do i have to buy it?
If you look under the menu for multimedia- you may have XCDRoast or Gnometoaster, there may be a KDE specific one also (KreateCD or KonCD). They are free, and are likely to be included in your install (mine were). All of these apps are FREE. I have NEVER paid anything for any linux application, nor do I intend to (the only reason you *might* is to run an enterprise-style server with 1000's of users!)
Here's a good list for applications: http://www.linux.org/apps/index.html http://apps.kde.org
At present, Linux doesn't require any anti-virus software, since there are only 2 I know of (and are virtually impossible to catch). Linux also includes a firewall, which you would have set up during installation. Linux's file system does not fragment and slow down like Windows-it's far more intelligent. You may have chose ext3 as your filesystem - this automatically checks the data so it doesn't need to do a scandisk as soon as it comes up after a powercut etc. In the event of emergencies like that, it will automatically run a program called fsck (like scandisk) that repairs any damage.
Basically, the stuff you paid money for in Windows is either free or not needed because Linux is more robust and smart! ;) On the downside, it often requires more setup, however, this can be seen as a pluspoint-you get to learn about how your computer actually works.
Personally, I don't think Linux is quite ready for mass home use (as you do have to learn a bit about your computer), but perfect for servers and office use (since someone else would be setting it up). However, things are changing and the linux of today is miles easier than the linux of a year ago- and it will only get better!
